Ground game halted as Cardinals' Johnson, Ellington exit with injuries

The Arizona Cardinals' backfield took a hit in Sunday's 19-13 victory at the San Francisco 49ers.

Starting running back Chris Johnson and backup Andre Ellington each were knocked out of the game with injuries in the third quarter, leaving rookie David Johnson to shoulder the load for the remainder of the game.

Johnson managed only 17 yards on 12 carries before hurting his left knee and going to the locker room. Ellington exited earlier in the quarter with an injury to his right foot. Both players are expected to undergo MRI exams when the team returns home.

It was the third straight sub-par game for Johnson since he ripped off four 100-yard performances in a span of six games. Johnson has rushed for 138 yards on 55 carries over the past three contests, averaging 2.5 yards per carry.

The Cardinals also lost starting cornerback Jerraud Powers to a calf injury in the third quarter, although the team initially feared that it was an Achilles injury.
