New York Giants leading tackler Antrel Rolle was carted off the field after hurting his right ankle at training camp on Monday.

PAIN TRAIN

Jeremy Maclin was the first big name to fall. What other NFL players have suffered major injuries in 2013?

The nine-year safety was expected to have an MRI and other tests to determine the seriousness of the injury, coach Tom Coughlin said after practice.

"It's an ankle for right now, but it's obviously bothering him," Coughlin said.

Rolle was covering tight end Bear Pascoe on a pass near the right sideline. Both went up to catch a high pass and Rolle landed awkwardly and fell to the grass. He got up but had trouble putting weight on his leg.

"It's like a rebound drill," Coughlin said. "They step on each other's feet."

Coughlin did not seem to think the injury was serious, but he wanted to hear the test results before saying more.

Trainers and defensive coordinator Perry Fewell ran to see what happened. After his shoe and sock were removed, Rolle winced when pressure was applied to his ankle.

He was helped off the field and examined further before being carted off.

"Hopefully, it's an ankle and he is coming right back," Coughlin said.

Rolle has not missed a game in three seasons with the Giants. The 30-year-old had a career-best 108 tackles last season, marking the second straight year he led New York in tackles. He also had two interceptions, five passes defended, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Ryan Mundy, who was signed as a free agent, replaced Rolle with the first team on Monday.

"He is a good sound player," Coughlin said of Mundy, who is entering his fifth NFL season.
