Andy Reid: Peters will learn to keep his emotions intact

Andy Reid doesn't want to dull his first-round pick's sharp edge.

But he would like to see Marcus Peters play smarter now that he's a Kansas City Chief.

“I don’t want to get rid of any of that competitiveness," said Reid. "I don’t want to back him off from bump‐and‐run, I love the way he plays it — he’s going to get up and challenge you."

For his style, Reid says he expects penalty flags at his first-rounder's feet. It sounds like he'll take some good with the bad if it means getting under the skin of receivers.

Is there going to be a penalty for that? Yeah, there’s going to be a penalty. He’s going to get up and he’s going to bring it to you; he’s a physical player, a tremendous tackler. He’s a heck of a player.”

But talent was never the issue for Peters. He channeled that physicality in the wrong ways in college, and after a headbutting ejection and a coaching confrontation, he was dismissed from Washington.

Reid wants his new cornerback dialed in -- but not to an extreme.

"He’s smart; it’s just those competitive juices," he said. "You have to know how to control those.”
