Aaron Rodgers makes serious MVP case in Packers' blowout win over Vikings

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 12:22 a.m. ET

Run the table? Aaron Rodgers is running himself firmly into MVP contention.

When Rodgers said the Packers could run the table, he took it upon himself to make it happen. In his past six games, Rodgers has thrown 14 touchdown passes without a single interception.

Arguably his best performance came Christmas Eve versus Minnesota. He torched the Vikings secondary with 347 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran one in himself. Two touchdown passes belonged to his favorite target Jordy Nelson, the others going to Davante Adams and Richard Rodgers.

After 15 games, Rodgers has thrown for 4,128 yards, 36 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. He’s added 327 rushing yards with four touchdowns.

In his MVP season two years ago, Rodgers threw for 4,381 yards, 38 touchdowns with five interceptions, while rushing for 269 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Outside of the interception tally, Rodgers could better each other category from 2014.

Not only has he lit up the stat sheets, but also lifted his team from a 4-6 record to Super Bowl contender. In the five-game winning run, the Packers are averaging 30.8 points per game. No team wants to meet these Packers, or more specifically, they don’t want to play Aaron Rodgers.

Even better news for Green Bay was the health of their quarterback. Despite a brief scare after a heavy hit, which turned out to be a stinger, Rodgers’ calf and hamstring injuries appear to be in the rear view mirror.

“Once I got moving, I felt like myself,” Rodgers said postgame. He rolled out of the pocket without any limitations, and ran in a touchdown.

Rodgers might not win a third MVP award, but he at the very least deserves to be a serious contender. Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott, Matt Ryan and Derek Carr are all worthy contenders, but right now there’s no more valuable player in the NFL than Aaron Rodgers.
