La Jolla, CA (Sports Network) - San Diego running back was carted off the field with a heel injury during practice Wednesday. Tomlinson injured his left heel after taking a handoff in practice. His body appeared to twist while his feet remained planted. He then left on a golf cart and did not return.

The injury is not expected to be serious, but head coach Marty Schottenheimer is not certain if Tomlinson will play in Saturday's exhibition game in Houston.

It was the second time in less than a week that Tomlinson was forced to leave practice. Last Thursday, Tomlinson exited the morning session after becoming dehydrated. However, after being treated with fluids through an IV, he was able to return in the afternoon.

The 24-year-old Tomlinson was the NFL's second-leading rusher last season, gaining 1,683 yards on 372 carries. He also rushed for 14 touchdowns and caught 79 passes for 489 yards and one TD.

Two seasons ago, Tomlinson set three team rookie rushing records and broke Lance

Alworth’s

36-year-old franchise record for combined yards from scrimmage with 1,603 total. He finished the season with 1,236 rushing yards and 367 receiving yards and was voted to the Pro Bowl.

Tomlinson was the fifth overall pick in the 2001 draft after a stellar career at TCU.
