Sanchez delivers, Tebow sputters in Jets scrimmage

Judging from the frequent chants and cheers, Tim Tebow was clearly the most popular guy in the stadium.

The New York Jets' backup quarterback, though, was hardly the best player on the field.

While Mark Sanchez led the Jets on an impressive touchdown drive, Tebow mostly sputtered during the team's intrasquad scrimmage Saturday night.

''Didn't get too many passes off today,'' Tebow said. ''I felt like when I threw them, I threw them pretty accurately. It felt like we made some pretty good plays overall as an offense. We're going against a really good defense. Overall, I think it was a good day. We had fun out there.''

Sanchez and Tebow each led four drives Saturday night at Cortland Stadium, with the starting quarterback going 11 of 16 for 82 yards and a scoring toss to Bilal Powell. The touchdown capped an impressive 60-yard drive for the Jets (No. 17 in the AP Pro32).

''There were ups and downs,'' Sanchez said. ''From an offensive perspective, I thought the tempo was great. We were in and out of the huddle. There were a couple of penalties and a fumble, but no interceptions from the quarterbacks, so that's a positive.''

Tebow - serenaded by ''Tee-bow! Tee-bow!'' chants throughout - was 1 of 4, with the completion coming on a fake punt. He also threw a long pass that Dexter Jackson just missed, and another that Eron Riley dropped.

''I feel pretty well, just as far as my knowledge of the offense and executing it and seeing the right reads out there today,'' Tebow said. ''I know we didn't put up the points that we wanted to and get it in the end zone. As far as the three passes I threw, I felt pretty good about those and felt pretty good about the decisions. Probably would have liked to have thrown one of them a little quicker, but I felt pretty good about it.''

Tebow ran three times for 14 yards, and had two fumbled exchanges with center Caleb Schlauderaff.

''I'm not too worried about it,'' Tebow said. ''Obviously, you don't want it, but we were just rotating in different guys and trying to mix up cadences.''

Tebow also lined up as the punt protector and completed the pass to safety Eric Smith on a fake punt.

''He's a threat every time he drops back,'' coach Rex Ryan said. ''You don't know if he's going to run it or throw it. It looked like he had a deep ball, he had a nice touch on the deep ball, but he's got to get it out a little quicker and those are the things we're still working on. Overall, I was happy with the way he and Mark looked.''

After the practice, Tebow was mobbed by dozens of kids and adults looking to get his autograph or take a picture with him. He realized, as he made his way through a group of several reporters, that he still had two Sharpie pens in his hands.

''I must've taken them from some kids,'' he said with a big smile.

Fourth-string quarterback Matt Simms, the son of former Giants star Phil Simms, had one of the night's highlights, connecting with Raymond Webber on a 31-yard touchdown pass.

''Obviously, there's this quarterback controversy with Matt Simms,'' Ryan joked. ''Or was it Matt Simms or Phil Simms? I don't know, but he looked pretty darn impressive.''
