can give the some adequate production. He¿s not quite the ideal pickup for their defense, but there¿s not many options available right now appealing to them.
The big issue is whether the desire is really there for McGlockton. A source within the organization terms McGlockton¿s conditioning to be ¿very poor¿ at this point. But he¿s convinced the organization and Terry Bradway that he¿ll work hard over the next month to get back into playing shape.
Many teams questioned McGlockton¿s desire after he tailed off over the latter part of the 2002 season with Denver at age 33 as most of the defense stopped responding to then-defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes.
McGlockton replaces recently suspended in the interior rotation along with and rookie . The will really miss the interior pass rush Evans provided. That leaves a big hole in their defense. They don¿t know what they¿ll really get in terms of pass rush production from Robertson this season. And McGlockton really doesn¿t offer that at this stage of his career.
Although Herman Edwards would like to run his Tampa Bay style defense with the , defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell does a really good job adapting to the strengths of his players. McGlockton can¿t give them the pass rush they lose inside, but provides the with a big frame to plug interior gaps against the run. But his effectiveness will be determined by whether he gets into shape and provides a solid effort throughout the course of the season. The can¿t afford McGlockton to fade, especially down the stretch if they want to build off their playoff run from last season.
Quite simply I ask myself this question. Would I want in the heart of my defense if I was looking to go deeper in the playoffs this season? No.
