Herman Edwards is striving to build a strong defensive club. The changes he has made have shifted talent from the secondary to the front four, which fits Edwards' philosophy much better. The front four has more speed and pass rush depth with rookie Bryant Thomas and veteran . Thomas has great upfield ability while White is a solid, all-around type. The return of should make a huge difference inside against the run. They also added veterans and to provide short-term stability. They should be more consistent against the run this season. The cornerback swap that added and downgrades their speed for more savvy within Edwards' cover-2 philosophy. But it's critical that the pass rush produces to put these guys in a position to make plays. They'll be exposed downfield at times. needs to show more consistency at free safety like he did in Tampa Bay. That would solidify this secondary.

Edwards displays a lot of potential as a coach once he puts together the right mix of chemistry within the locker room and molds this club in his philosophy. They also have one of the NFL's best defensive coordinators in Ted Cottrell. But offensive coordinator Paul Hackett needs to become more in tune with the overall program and connect better with his players.

The schedule is favorable for the . And finishing only one game behind New England in the AFC East offers hope. This is a very tight division that gives the an opportunity to make noise if the cards fall the right way.

The could really go either way this season. A lot of people look at them as a middle of the road team on paper. But this could be a very scary team if they stay healthy and the chemistry meshes throughout the course of the season. The could be a true dark horse.
