Seau's name to grace amphitheater

A beachfront amphitheater in Junior Seau's California hometown will be renamed in honor of the former NFL star, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Oceanside City Council voted 3-2 Wednesday night to approve the name change honoring Seau, who grew up and lived there until he committed suicide on May 2.

"You cannot say Oceanside and not say Junior Seau," councilwoman Esther Sanchez told The Union-Tribune. "It is proper to honor him in this way and continue to remember the greatness of this man who will continue to be in our hearts."

The two dissenting voters reportedly cited their desire not to waive a council policy that requires a two-year waiting period before renaming facilities in the town, 40 miles north of San Diego.

"I understand it's emotional, and I'm probably not being real popular right now," said councilman Jerome Kern, who voted against waiving the policy. "I'm worried we're just creating problems for us down the road."

Seau's sister said the family was overwhelmed by the news.

"We are honored that the city would consider naming the [facilities] after him," Annette So'oto said. "What better place to honor him."

The 12-time Pro Bowler spent 20 years in the NFL, playing for the Chargers, Dolphins and Patriots.
