One of the most surprising top 10 picks in recent draft memory finally has his rookie deal.

Defensive end Tyson Alualu has agreed to a five-year contract with the Jaguars worth nearly $28 million and just over $17.5 million guaranteed, FOXSports.com has learned.

Reports leaked prematurely Sunday that the deal was done, but Alualu at that point had not agreed, instead wanting to discuss further with his family.

"I definitely feel I can come in and give them what they are looking for," Alualu said during offseason workouts. "I don't want to disappoint anybody. I will definitely give them my all. I'm ready to come in and compete and try to earn that spot."

Alualu was one of the most stunning early first-round picks of not only this draft, but perhaps the last decade as he wasn’t in any of the prominent mock drafts in the first round, let alone the top 10. But the Jaguars chose him at No. 10 overall in April as the first defensive end selected.

"No one had him projected as a first-rounder," agent Kenneth Zuckerman said. "For him, this has been an amazing story."

Coach Jack Del Rio and general manager Gene Smith said following practice Sunday night that Alualu had accepted the offer. But the player's agent, Kenneth Zuckerman, insisted it was not a done deal. Zuckerman says Alualu took a night to consider it before agreeing to the deal, which includes $17.5 million guaranteed.

"I think it's important to have him here and we're looking forward to getting him here and getting to work," Del Rio said.

Alualu, the 10th overall pick from California, is at home in Hawaii. He's expected to arrive for training camp Tuesday.
