No one gave the New England much of a chance of contending in the AFC last season. They went 5-11 in 2000 and looked overmatched in their division. Quarterback appeared to be at a career crossroad, and his backup was some guy named . Coach Bill Belichick had brought in 22 free agents in a rather desperate attempt to fill the many holes in the Pats' lineup. But last we last checked, was on his way to Disney World and the were being fitted for Super Bowl rings. FOXSports.com's Clark Judge and David Moore are on the training camp trails this summer. Part of their mission: Find us this year's . In Part V of this eight-part series, we look at whether the New York could emerge as that team.
NEW YORK JETS
(2001 record: 10-6, 3rd in AFC East)

Q&A: Herman Edwards

FOXSports.com's Clark Judge writes: A year ago, Herman Edwards did the improbable — he took the to the playoffs in his first year as head coach. Now, he¿s trying for an encore performance, and the odds are against him: Quarterback turns 39, the offensive line is unsettled and the defending Super Bowl champions are in the division and on the schedule twice.

Edwards remains undaunted, confident his club can exceed the performance of last year¿s team. How? Read on.

  • JUDGE: Jason's revenge

The New York think they can squeeze at least one more year out of quarterback , and so far the signs are encouraging. But it¿s not their quarterback who short-stopped the ¿ flight last season; it was their defensive tackle.

Meet , who tore his rotator cuff on the first day of training camp and sat out the entire season. The loss of Ferguson was devastating to a club already short up the gut, and the never recovered: They ranked 28th against the run and were ripped for 215 yards by Oakland in a first-round playoff loss.

That game still rankles Ferguson. So does last season.

  • CAPSULE: Vinny and the

Granted, the aren't a team that will have to crawl out from the rubble of a 5-11 or 6-10 season the year before, like New England a year ago. But it seems like when folks talk about the AFC East nowadays, the get overshadowed by the defending champs in New England, in Miami and in Buffalo.
  • SCOUT'S HONOR: Report card

The could really go either way this season. A lot of people look at them as a middle of the road team on paper. But this could be a very scary team if they stay healthy and the chemistry meshes throughout the course of the season. The could be a true dark horse.
  • CAMPTOWN: Hail to Hofstra

The hold training camp at Hofstra University, a school not known for its football prowess. But it should be.

Hofstra's just a I-AA school, but it has five alumni in the NFL. Three of them are starters ¿ guard of the and All-Pros of the and of the . In addition, guard is a backup for the , and quarterback is a former 49er quarterback who is job-hunting this off-season.
