Chargers outside linebacker Jarret Johnson hopes to play against Kansas City on Sunday, six days after having surgery on his left hand.

Johnson, who missed practice all week, was listed as doubtful on the injury report Friday. He was hurt during a loss at Miami on Sunday and had surgery the next day.

The Chargers (4-6) have lost three straight games and are essentially playing for their season.

That's why Johnson hopes to play despite having his hand in a cast.

''This is a very important game for us and everybody needs to carry their weight,'' Johnson said. ''I've struggled with that this year with all my injuries. That's not something new, but that's something you've got to deal with.''

Johnson has missed three games this year with a hamstring injury.

Rookie coach Mike McCoy said Johnson played with a hand injury while with Baltimore, ''so we'll see how he is Sunday and go from there.''

Also Friday, outside linebacker Melvin Ingram said he won't play Sunday. He just returned to practice this week as he recovers from tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in May.

''They're been through a lot more stuff than I have,'' Ingram said of his teammates. ''I've just been through rehab, working out and conditioning stuff. But they've been through training camp and almost three-fourths of a season. So I just need to work on everything, and I'm just trying to get better every day.''

The Chargers have until Dec. 10 to add Ingram to the active roster or leave him on the physically unable to perform list for the rest of the year.

McCoy said he doesn't know whether Ingram will play this season.

''He's got a very good chance, but it's also something that we've got to, each day, pick it up a little bit more and see how his knee responds. He's done a great job the last three days.

''We'll let you know,'' he added. ''When Melvin Ingram's ready to play, he'll be on the field.''

Left tackle King Dunlap will miss his second straight start due to a neck injury. He missed two starts earlier this season with a concussion. Cornerback Johnny Patrick (concussion) and wide receiver Eddie Royal (toe) are questionable. Wide receivers Keenan Allen (knee) and Vincent Brown (shoulder), and safety Jahleel Addae (ankle) are probable.
