Published Sep. 16, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was helped off the field with an ankle injury in the first quarter against the Arizona Cardinals. Multiple reports indicate that Hernandez suffered a high ankle sprain.

According to the Boston Herald, the third-year tight end was seen in the locker room wearing a walking boot on his right foot while using crutches.

Hernandez, who was grabbing his right ankle, required help to walk off. Hernandez was immediately assisted into the locker room. He never returned to action.

Hernandez caught six passes for 59 yards in the Week 1 win against the Titans.
