Week 17 Power Rankings

WEEK#
Posted January 31, 2011 06:57 PM EST

The New England Patriots showed the NFL world why they are the No. 1 team at this point after their thrashing of the host Buffalo Bills last week. They've already sewn up the No. 1 seed in the AFC and are playing at the top of their game at a critical juncture. It will be interesting to see if any other teams in the AFC can challenge them during the playoffs. But it won't be easy since the Patriots are undefeated at home this season.

In the NFC, the Atlanta Falcons finally lost a game at home, but it wasn't as though the New Orleans Saints were dominant. That game could have gone either way. The Falcons still deserve to be the NFC's top-ranked team at this point based on their performance over the course of the season.

The Steelers will get back starting DE Aaron Smith for the playoffs, so the team figures to be close to full strength when it matters most. And it certainly looks like they have their offense going in the right direction.

This is yet another team that practically no one saw being this good. The fact that they won the NFC North is an amazing feat. And the Mike Martz-Jay Cutler marriage is looking pretty good right about now.

Count me as one of those who don't believe head coach Tom Coughlin should be fired. Yes, his team has regressed over the past two games, but there's a reason why he led the Giants to a Super Bowl victory during the 2007 season: He's a pretty good coach.

I realize the Chargers have dealt with a lot of injuries on offense, but how do you explain their usually solid defense laying a huge egg during last week's loss to the host Bengals? Rarely used WR Jerome Simpson, who had a grand total of three career receptions in almost three seasons of play coming into the game, had six receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns against the Chargers. That sums up the day for the Chargers, who are now out of the playoff picture.Collapse Description
