Week 16 Power Rankings

WEEK#
Posted January 31, 2011 06:59 PM EST

The New England Patriots showed the NFL world why they are the No. 1 team at this point after their thrashing of the host Buffalo Bills last week. They've already sewn up the No. 1 seed in the AFC and are playing at the top of their game at a critical juncture. It will be interesting to see if any other teams in the AFC can challenge them during the playoffs. But it won't be easy since the Patriots are undefeated at home this season.

In the NFC, the Atlanta Falcons finally lost a game at home, but it wasn't as though the New Orleans Saints were dominant. That game could have gone either way. The Falcons still deserve to be the NFC's top-ranked team at this point based on their performance over the course of the season.

Atlanta has the NFL's longest winning streak this season at eight games. And the reason why the Falcons are playing so well is because they aren't making a lot of mistakes on either side of the ball. Even if they lose at home to the division-rival Saints this week, they're still almost certain to win the NFC South since they host the lowly Panthers in Week 17 -- and that's a game that they won't lose.Collapse Description

The Saints simply are not playing at the same impressive level from both sides of the ball like they were at this point last season. It's hard to point to anything specific, but they can't be called a dominant team anymore.

For whatever reason, the Jets are still throwing the ball more than running it, even when they are leading in a game. The foundation has to start with the running game, not with second-year QB Mark Sanchez.
