News: Hoyer completed 6-of-8 passes for 69 yards in Thursday's preseason finale against the Bears. Impact: Hoyer led the Browns to a Ben Tate touchdown on his only drive of the game before giving way to backup Johnny Manziel. It was surely a relief for Browns fans that Hoyer was able to look sharp for once this preseason, and he remains the unquestioned starter heading into Week 1 at Pittsburgh. Manziel also showed flashes of potential in this game (although he completed just 6-of-17 passes), and could end up being used by the team in special offensive packages. It's unclear exactly what coach Mike Pettine has planned for the backup, but Hoyer should hang on to the starting job until he proves otherwise.(RotoWire, )

News: Hoyer completed 10-of-16 passes for 84 yards, with one touchdown and one interception in Saturday's preseason game against the Rams. Impact: Three days after being named as the starter, Hoyer continued to have a poor preseason, with his lousy passing line complemented by two sacks and a lost fumble. Though he'll likely handle at least the first two or three games, Hoyer probably won't have a particularly long leash to work with, and his odds of succeeding aren't good. Assuming Josh Gordon is in fact suspended, Cleveland will open the season with perhaps the worst group of wideouts in the league. The Browns also lack a strong receiving threat at running back, though TE Jordan Cameron is undoubtedly a bright spot. Hoyer managed not to fall flat on his face in two starts last season, but it's hard to imagine him successfully putting this team on his back.(RotoWire, )

News: Coach Mike Pettine indicated Friday morning that Hoyer could be featured in a two-quarterback system "down the road," NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports. Impact: Hoyer was announced as the Browns' starting quarterback Wednesday morning, and the veteran is expected to take the field Week 1 against the Steelers. However, the athletic ability of backup Johnny Manziel is tough to ignore, so Pettine wouldn't rule out using a two-QB system at some point this season. Manziel would mostly be used for designed runs in this scenario, so it shouldn't cut drastically into Hoyer's production.(RotoWire, )

News: Hoyer will open the season as Cleveland's starting quarterback after winning his summer competition over rookie Johnny Manziel. Impact: Browns coach Mike Pettine picked Hoyer over Manziel to start the Sept. 7 at Pittsburgh, finally ending a competition that dragged through the summer. Hoyer is the choice for now, but the real test for him will be how long he keeps it from Manziel. (STATS, 11:02am)

News: Hoyer was named the Browns' starting quarterback Wednesday morning by coach Mike Pettine, ESPN reports. Impact: The team sounds like it will give Hoyer a bit of a leash as Pettine said he doesn't want the veteran constantly looking over his shoulder, but we have to imagine Hoyer - and maybe the Browns as well - has to be mildly successful to keep the team from firing up the Johnny Manziel era.(RotoWire, )

News: Hoyer completed just 2-of-6 passes for 16 yards in Monday's preseason game against the Redskins. Impact: After the game, Hoyer stated that his performance "probably couldn't have been any worse." He received the starting nod but was unable to lead the Browns to a touchdown for the second straight preseason game. His main competitor -- Johnny Manziel -- received significantly more reps, but much of that time came with the second team, and the rookie didn't even complete 50 percent of his passes. The Browns coaching staff is expected to sit down and name a starting quarterback for Week 1 on Tuesday, but neither of their options have truly excelled at this point. If a starter does end up being confirmed after the meeting, Hoyer will likely have the edge by default. However, it remains a possibility that coach Mike Pettine pushes back the decision, with the intention of collecting more film on both options.(RotoWire, )

News: Though Hoyer is starting Monday night's game against Washington over rookie Johnny Manziel, coach Mike Pettine indicated Friday that "all of our options are still on the table," the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Impact: While Hoyer is slated to start Monday night's contest, he and Manziel are expected to split time with the Browns' first-team offense throughout the first half. Pettine then plans to meet with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, quarterback coach Dowell Loggains and GM Ray Farmer on Tuesday in advance of naming the team's Week 1 starter, an assignment that the coach acknowledges doesn't necessarily come with a season-long commitment from the team.(RotoWire, )
