NFL 5 43 NFL veterans who need to step up 11444778 Put up or pack up Put+up+or+pack+up NFL

There are several NFL veterans who'll be on the hot seat this season, but even if they make it through this year unscathed, they could see a reduction in playing time or be shown the door early in 2011. Adam Caplan takes a look at six veterans whose jobs could very well be on the line in 2010 and beyond.

With the retirement of starting Kurt Warner, it's Leinart's job to lose. While he'll have veteran Derek Anderson backing him up, it could be rookie John Skelton who Leinart may be looking over his shoulder at over the coming months. The coaching staff indentified Skelton, selected in the fifth round, as a good fit for their passing offense well before April's NFL draft. So, it's not unreasonable to think the strong-armed passer could get a serious shot to play in 2011 if he's up to speed on their playbook. Another factor against Leinart is he's due over $7 million in base salary in 2011 — the final year of his rookie deal. Keep in mind this coaching staff wasn't around when Leinart was drafted in 2006. -- Adam Caplan

Dallas' slot receiver might see a reduction in playing time due to the addition of first-round pick Dez Bryant. However, Bryant might not be the only reason Crayton could see less snaps. Practice observers have noted that second-year WR Kevin Ogletree, who went undrafted in 2009, could push for extended playing time in the slot this season. Ogletree only saw 47 plays on offense last season, but that number could more than double in 2010.

The hold on the starting job by Edwards is viewed as tenuous at best. In fact, head coach Chan Gailey recently said the job was essentially wide open. While many have pointed to the presence of former Green Bay second-round pick Brian Brohm, rookie seventh-round pick Levi Brown could be the last man standing in 2011. Edwards, Brohm and journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick weren't brought in by the new front office or coaching staff, so Brown could be viewed as their guy.

When the Bills signed the veteran linebacker, many pointed to Davis as a sure-fire starter and difference maker in Buffalo's revamped defense. But the 31-year-old is with his third team in the last three seasons, and it's worth noting the new coaching staff has lined up rookie sixth-round pick Arthur Moats on the inside during OTA practices. Moats, who played his entire collegiate career on the outside, will bring size and physicality to the position. It'll be interesting to see if he can take significant snaps away from the veteran. If he can, Davis could be playing for his fourth team in four years in 2011.

The former first-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft has just 5.5 sacks in his two seasons of play. While Harvey's started 25 games in two seasons, he's yet to become a factor. Several personnel sources told to keep an eye on rookie fifth-round pick Austen Lane. While he might not take a lot of playing time away from the third-year pro this season, Lane's seen by some scouts as having more upside and better edge rushing skill than Harvey.

NFL 5 43 NFL veterans who need to step up 11444883 Tarvaris Jackson, QB, Minnesota Vikings Tarvaris+Jackson%2C+QB%2C+Minnesota+Vikings NFL

Jackson enters the fifth year of his career with a lot of uncertainty regarding his future. However, it seems he's firmly entrenched in the No. 2 role with veteran Brett Favre widely expected to return for his second season with the team. What is his future past this season? Jackson's on a one-year contract, and the coaching staff moved rookie Joe Webb from wide receiver to quarterback during recent OTA practices. Webb, a collegiate quarterback who scouts around the NFL deem intriguing because of his size and arm strength, could get more exposure to the position if the team trades veteran Sage Rosenfels, who's due $2.6 million in 2010 and $3 million in 2011.
