NFL 5 107 Brian Billick looks ahead to NFL Week 8 31944783 Seattle Seahawks at St. Louis Rams (Sunday, 8:40 p.m. ET, ESPN) Seattle+Seahawks+at+St.+Louis+Rams+%28Sunday%2C+8%3A40+p.m.+ET%2C+ESPN%29 NFL

The Seahawks defense is sure to take advantage of a Rams offense that will be starting a backup quarterback for the first time this season. The Seahawks have the second-best passing defense as it is and the Rams weren’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard even with Sam Bradford. The Rams rank as the 30th-best offense in terms of yards and the 18th-ranked scoring offense and are getting basically no help from their first-round draft pick, Tavon Austin. Austin was dubbed “the most explosive” player in the draft, but seven games into his career, he is averaging a dismal 6.8 yards per catch and his season long is just a 25-yard reception. It’s impossible to be labeled a bust in just your first year, but he needs to find a way to make a play for a team that desperately needs to generate big plays on offense. That will be an almost impossible task this weekend as he will face arguably the NFL’s best secondary and two corners that are surely going to rough him up at the line of scrimmage. It wouldn’t be a stretch to pick the Seahawks in a shutout.

NFL 5 107 Brian Billick looks ahead to NFL Week 8 31944786 Green Bay Packers at Minnesota Vikings (Sunday, 8:30 p.m. ET, NBC) Green+Bay+Packers+at+Minnesota+Vikings+%28Sunday%2C+8%3A30+p.m.+ET%2C+NBC%29 NFL

The Packers will surely be without Randall Cobb and Jermichael Finley on Sunday and James Jones’ status is uncertain. If he misses the game as well, the Packers will be missing more than 57 percent of its offensive production. While Aaron Rodgers will still find a way to move the ball through the air, it will be Eddie Lacy who picks up the slack. In his last three games, Lacy is averaging right at 100 yards rushing and nearly 4.5 yards per carry. He should find some holes against the Vikings as well as they are just the 27th-ranked defense and are giving up more than 30 points per game. The Vikings will continue the revolving door at quarterback as this week will once again be Christian Ponder’s turn to start. But no matter who plays quarterback, they aren’t going to keep up with Rodgers. I’ll take the Packers on the road.

Believe it or not, despite all the injuries at the receiver position and the mounting pressure of a 2-4 start, Matt Ryan is quietly having the best year of his career. He is on pace for 5,125 yards, 34 touchdowns and just eight interceptions – all potential career bests. Despite the start, six of the remaining 10 opponents for Atlanta are .500 or worse and it’s not time to stick the fork in the Falcons just yet. As for the Cardinals, Larry Fitzgerald is just four receptions shy of reaching 800 for his career. If he accomplishes that on Sunday, he would be the fifth fastest player in the history of the league to reach 800 catches. Just imagine how quickly he would have gotten there with competent quarterbacks the last couple of seasons.

Mike Shanahan will travel back to Denver for the first time since being fired in 2008 after coaching the team for the previous 14 seasons. Shanahan was 138-86 with Denver and took them to seven postseasons, but he isn’t likely to have the same type of success of Sunday. The Redskins have the 29th-ranked passing defense and will be facing the best passing offense in the NFL that is anxious to get over a poor showing in prime time last week. Peyton Manning has missed some practice time with an ankle injury, but that is hardly going to slow him down on Sunday as he try to redeem himself. Robert Griffin III is likely to have big numbers as well as the Redskins could be trying to play catch-up for the entire game. This should be a fun game for fantasy players to watch as stats should be through the roof, but in reality football, the Broncos win again.

Terrelle Pryor is coming off a Week 6 loss in which he was intercepted three times and sacked nine, but he isn’t the only quarterback that is struggling with sacks this season. Ben Roethlisberger has been sacked 21 times, more at this stage of the season than in any other season in his career. The Steelers offensive line has been subpar for multiple years in a row now and it may finally be catching up to them. In years past, Big Ben has hid the deficiency by side-stepping and shrugging off tacklers and creating big gains off of broken plays, but that magic has been absent from the offense this season. Even so, The Steelers have won two straight and will make it three straight on Sunday as they will take over second place in the division after being written off just three weeks ago.

The Jets have yet to put together back-to-back wins this season and are 1-2 on the road, but their daunting defense gives them a chance in every game, no matter the opponent. The Bengals offense has been lights out the last two weeks as Andy Dalton has thrown for 709 yards and six touchdowns. He will have to be that good again as it is highly unlikely that the Bengals will be able to run the ball against the interior defense of the Jets. Sheldon Richardson and Muhammad Wilkerson may be the best pair of defensive tackles in the entire league and they will make it tough up the middle all day for the Bengals. I think this turns into a defensive battle with a low score that could go in either direction, but I’ll go with the Jets in the upset.

Drew Brees is 3-0 in his career against the Bills, completing nearly 70 percent of his passes and never throwing an interception. But he's coming off his worst game of the season in the Week 6 loss to the Patriots. It isn’t known if Jimmy Graham will be available and even if he is, he is probably not going to be at full strength. But give Drew Brees and Sean Payton an extra week to prepare and I’ll take them any time. With that said, the Bills lead the NFL in interceptions with 12 and employ the player with the second-most sacks in the NFL, Mario Williams, and the player with the third-most tackles, Kiko Alonso. This isn’t going to be a walk in the park for Brees, but he still puts up 30-plus points and gets the win.

The 49ers have lost just two games this season and it’s not a coincidence that those were the only two games in which they failed to surpass 25 rushing attempts. Compare that to last week when Frank Gore had 24 attempts by himself as the 49ers beat the Titans by two touchdowns. Jacksonville is the league’s worst rushing defense and yards should come pretty easy to not only Frank Gore, but Kendall Hunter and Colin Kaepernick as well. Chad Henne will start once again for the Jaguars at quarterback and that means Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts have the chance to put up some decent stats, but if Henne turns the ball over, this game will get out of hand quickly. I’ll take the 49ers big and will guess that they will have multiple 100-yard rushers.

The Chiefs are the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL and Jamaal Charles is a big reason why. Charles is the only player in the NFL that has had at least 100 scrimmage yards and a touchdown in all seven games this season. He is the poster boy for the new-age running back who can impact all phases of the offense and whose yards are accumulated in multiple ways. Inside runs, outside runs, quick passes, screens … he can do it all. The Browns will start yet another quarterback, Jason Campbell, and he will be going up against the best defense in the NFL. The Browns defense has been very solid in its own right, but in this case, if they surrender just one touchdown, that will most likely be too much. I’ll take the Chiefs by at least two touchdowns.

The Eagles are 0-3 at home this season and haven’t won at Lincoln Financial Field in nine straight homes games dating back to Sept. 30, 2012. That is incredible, considering the fans in Philadelphia and how intimidating that stadium once was. Even in their first win last week, the Giants offense was atrocious, but they will be facing the worst defense in the league in terms of yards and the 26th-ranked scoring defense. They should at least stumble into 21 points but that won’t be enough to beat the Eagles who will get back to the ground game with LeSean McCoy and Michael Vick. I’ll take the Eagles, despite their recent history at home.

The Cowboys are coming off back-to-back wins for the first time this season, but more impressive was their defensive performance last week. The Cowboys surrendered just three points against the Eagles, which was a 22-point improvement over their season average. Monte Kiffin’s defense will have its hands full again as the Lions currently boast the fifth-best passing offense, the seventh-best total offense and the eighth-ranked scoring offense. This game is one of just two this weekend in which both teams have a winning record. Each team currently sits at 4-3 and each has beaten just one team that currently has a winning record. So it will be a true test for both, but I’ll take the Lions at home.

The Dolphins started the season with three straight wins, but are in the midst of a three-game losing streak in which they have scored nearly three points fewer and given up nearly 12 points more than that 3-0 start. But the Dolphins aren’t the only ones facing a dry spell. Tom Brady has just one touchdown pass in the last three games and has completed a dismal 51.2 percent of his passes for a passer rating of 60.3. Rob Gronkowski will play for the second straight week after being targeted a career-high 17 times in Week 7. One of those streaks is going to break this weekend, and I’d be foolish not to assume it is going to be Tom Brady to break out of the slump. I’ll go with the Patriots at home in a close game.
