NFL 5 2520 Brian Billick NFL Week 3 Look Ahead 31911968 Oakland Raiders at Denver Broncos (Monday, 8:40 p.m. ET, ESPN) Oakland+Raiders+at+Denver+Broncos+%28Monday%2C+8%3A40+p.m.+ET%2C+ESPN%29 NFL

The Broncos are just the seventh team in the Super Bowl era to score 40-plus points in the first two games of the season. Two of those other six teams went on to win the Super Bowl. Additionally, Peyton Manning’s nine passing touchdowns after the first two games are tied for the most in NFL history, but he is the only one to do it without throwing an interception. But before we just assume the Broncos will continue this offensive explosion, I should remind you that the Raiders are the third-best scoring defense, allowing just 15 points per game, and also are top-five in passing defense and total defense after the first two games. But let's also be sure to point out that they played the Jaguars last week ... everyone is going to have a good scoring defense after playing them. I’m not sure the Broncos will put up another 40 points, but they will easily be 3-0 after Monday night.

This game features one of the more intriguing position battles of the weekend as cornerback Ike Taylor will line up opposite wide receiver Brandon Marshall. Marshall has opened the season with back-to-back 100-yard receiving performances and has 22 catches in his three career games against the Steelers. Taylor held AJ Green to just 41 receiving yards in Week 2 and could be similarly effective against Marshall this week. He better be up to the challenge as the Steelers have failed to pressure the quarterback as they have in previous years. They have just one sack in their two games and -- oddly enough -- the Bears have allowed just one sack on the season.

Andrew Luck will be facing his former college coach and quarterback mentor in Jim Harbaugh, and it's actually a pretty decent matchup for the Colts. The 49ers are known for their daunting defense, but they have actually been pretty generous so far this season. They are just 23rd against the run, giving up nearly 118 yards per game, and have surrendered 28.5 points on average, bad enough to rank 27th in the league. The problem for the Colts won’t be on offense -- it will be trying to contain Colin Kaepernick on defense. Kaepernick has just 109 yards on the ground this season, but that may double after this week's matchup. The Colts are the fourth-worst rushing defense and surrendered 112 yards to Terrelle Pryor in Week 1. I like this game to be closer than you’d think, but the 49ers will establish dominance in the fourth quarter.

This game will feature the only two rookie quarterbacks who have started a game this season and both of them are coming off very different outings. For the Jets, Geno Smith threw three interceptions Sunday, all of them coming in the fourth quarter. On the other hand, Manuel led his team to his first career win and was just four yards shy of his first 300-yard passing performance. But this Jets defense is easily the best he has faced as they rank second in total defense and third in both rushing defense and scoring defense. This game will come down to turnovers and takeaways. Whoever avoids the big mistake wins the game. My bet is on the Bills at this point, even on the road.

The Dolphins began the season with two road wins and will now enjoy their home opener, but that might be all they enjoy Sunday. Matt Ryan is completing 71.6 percent of his passes and Julio Jones already has an 80-plus-yard touchdown catch, making him the first player in NFL history to have a touchdown of that length in each of his first three seasons. If the Dolphins hope to slow Ryan and Jones down, it will start with Cameron Wake, who has 2.5 sacks this season but has never faced Atlanta in his career. He should have plenty of chances as Ryan has been knocked down 16 times in the first two games, the third-most in the NFL. This game will be won or lost based on that matchup and I think the Falcons offensive line is eager to prove they are better than you think.

Tom Brady’s body language was all the buzz last week, but a win is the best medicine. With the Patriots at 2-0, I don’t anticipate any of that to carry over into this game. No one could use that winning medicine more than Greg Schiano and the Buccaneers. In addition to losing seven of their last eight games, they are 0-2 this season and have lost those two games by a total of just three points. The Bucs haven’t started 0-3 since Raheem Morris’ first season as head coach in 2009. Schiano was hired to replace Morris, mainly to instill discipline in a team that was lacking it, but the Bucs lead the league in total penalties and penalty yardage. All things considered, I like the Patriots in this game.

This is probably the best matchup of the weekend as the power struggle in the AFC is still in full swing. The Texans have needed two fourth-quarter comebacks against teams they probably should have handled easily but are 2-0 for the fourth straight season nonetheless. The Ravens are 1-1, having only lost to possibly the best team in the NFL, the Denver Broncos. Ed Reed, who will make his return to Baltimore after 11 seasons playing for the Ravens, will only remind Baltimore of the glaring weakness on this team. The secondary, particularly up the middle, has struggled to slow down opposing tight ends between the hashes and Houston will look to exploit that as Baltimore integrates a rookie free safety into the starting lineup. Owen Daniels is just one of the talented tight ends on the Texans roster who should finish with big numbers.

Bruce Arians is coming off his first win as the head coach of the Cardinals and the 24 points they have scored in each of his first two games would have been more points than 13 of their games in 2012. Conversely, Sean Payton and the Saints haven’t scored 24 points in either of their games so far. And coming off a less-than-impressive, 16-point outing against the Bucs last week, Drew Brees may be looking to take it out on a defense that has been giving up the 12th-most passing yards in the league. This will be a shootout, particularly if Larry Fitzgerald is healthy, but I like the Saints to win at home.

All the talk in Cleveland has been about the Trent Richardson trade and how the Browns are punting on the entire season. What would a win do to change their minds? They actually match up fairly well against the Vikings with the fourth-best rushing defense, giving up a mere 59 yards per game on the ground. Last week, we saw what can happen to the Vikings offense when they get minimal productivity on the ground. Adrian Peterson is averaging just 3.8 yards per game (down from a career average of 5.0) while Christian Ponder and the passing offense failed to make up the difference. Offensively, the Browns have scored just 16 points in two games and with Brian Hoyer suiting up for just his second career start, they shouldn’t expect much more than their eight-point average. This may be the lowest-scoring game in the NFL all season and that’s saying something considering the Browns and Ravens combined for just 20 points last weekend.

Aaron Rodgers threw for a career-high 480 yards last week against Washington, but was overshadowed by James Starks, who became the Packers’ first 100-yard rusher in 45 regular-season games. With Eddie Lacy still questionable with concussion symptoms, Starks will get a chance to back up his stellar performance, but this week he gets a Bengals defense that has given up just 62.5 yards per game and is the sixth-best defense in total yards after two games. The Bengals started the season with a lot of hype but after a hiccup in Chicago and a less-than-impressive performance at home against the Steelers, this could be their signature win to carry momentum through the first half of the season. But in the end, I just wouldn’t bet against Aaron Rodgers.

This is a showdown between two of the more surprising teams in the entire NFL. Both teams were just a couple plays away from being unbeaten rather than the 1-1 records they hold now. For the Chargers, Philip Rivers appears to have returned to his Pro Bowl ways with seven touchdowns passes to only one interception. Last week, he led an offensive attack that produced 539 total yards, their most since playing the Los Angeles Raiders in 1985. As for the Titans, Bernard Pollard has provided this defense with an identity and he has helped improve the worst scoring defense in the league last year. They’re now ranked in the top half of every major statistical category. Rivers may change that this weekend.

This may be the highest-scoring game of the weekend with RG3 looking to silence his critics and a Lions offense that is top-five in scoring. The Redskins will plan to get RG3 on track early as the team has just seven first-half points this season -- compared to 50 second-half points! As for the Lions, Matthew Stafford is 2-0 in his career against the Redskins and has thrown five touchdown passes in those games. He should have plenty of chances to add to that win total as the Redskins have been historically bad on defense. During the first two weeks, Jim Haslett’s unit has given up more than 511 yards per game and that is the second-most in league history since 1960. For comparison purposes, the worst defense in the history of the NFL, the 2012 Saints, gave up 440 yards per game. If I played fantasy football, I would start every Lions offensive player I could in this matchup as the Lions could easily score more than 40 points and will surely top 500 yards of total offense.

Eli Manning has thrown a league-high 56 interceptions over the last three seasons and is on pace to add another 56 in just this season alone. He obviously isn’t going to keep that pace, but his inability to protect the football is a real concern. But the offensive struggles of this team aren’t just one-sided. The Giants also have the league’s worst rushing attack with an embarrassing 36.5 yards per game. It isn’t going to get any easier this weekend against an underrated Panthers front seven. The Panthers invested their first two picks in the NFL Draft on interior defensive linemen and it’s paying off. They are a top-10 scoring defense and held one of the best rushing teams in the league, Seattle, to a meager 70 yards on the ground. Somebody is going to get their first win of the season and it honestly is a toss-up as to whom.

The Cowboys turned over play-calling responsibility to Bill Callahan this offseason in the hopes of having a more balanced offensive attack. But after two games, the Cowboys are ranked No. 25 in the NFL with just 68 rushing yards per game and DeMarco Murray had just 12 carries in a tight game against Kansas City last weekend. But they have an opportunity to turn it around on Sunday. In his last meeting against the Rams, Murray had 25 carries for a career-high 253 rushing yards, 114 more than his second-best career effort. But this isn’t the same Rams team as two years ago. This year’s version is ranked fifth in the league at stopping the run and if they can shut down Murray early, it will be interesting to see just how committed Callahan and Jason Garrett are to the running game. My guess is they won’t.
