NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31703248 Carolina Panthers Carolina+Panthers NFL

Best: The first time Steve Smith got his hands on a football in the NFL, he returned it 93 yards for a score. The Panthers knew they had a winner. Carolina spent a third-round pick on Smith and he was instrumental during the Panthers’ glory days.

Worst: Carolina’s first pick as a franchise could be its worst. Although Kerry Collins had a job in the league for 17 seasons, he never was the franchise QB the Panthers had hoped he'd become. Collins ended up quitting on Carolina and was later given the boot in 1998.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31703246 San Diego Chargers San+Diego+Chargers NFL

Best: Junior Seau was taken fifth overall in the 1990 NFL Draft and was an absolute stud in San Diego for 13 years. He played in 12 Pro Bowls and is likely a first-ballot Hall of Famer when he is eligible in 2015.

Worst: Ryan Leaf. Period.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31698015 Kansas City Chiefs Kansas+City+Chiefs NFL

Best: The Chiefs traded up in the first round of the 1997 NFL Draft to select tight end Tony Gonzalez 13th overall. The future Hall of famer holds numerous tight end records and continues to play at a high level. He recently announced that he will play his 17th season in the NFL.

Worst: The 1983 NFL Draft is known as one of the best because of the QBs who emerged from that class. Todd Blackledge wasn’t one of them. The Chiefs passed on Jim Kelly and Dan Marino to take Blackledge (No. 7 overall), who lasted only five seasons in Kansas City.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699421 Jacksonville Jaguars Jacksonville+Jaguars NFL

Best: In 2006, running back Maurice Jones-Drew tumbled in the NFL Draft until the Jags selected him in the second round, No. 60 overall. Since then, Jones-Drew has led the league in rushing (2011) and has been to multiple Pro Bowls.

Worst: Although Blaine Gabbert is entering just his third season as an NFL quarterback, he has been the Jags’ biggest bust. Since Jacksonville spent a top-10 pick on Gabbert in 2010, they have fired their head coach each season. With new management in the building, Gabbert could be on his last leg.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31698018 Oakland Raiders Oakland+Raiders NFL

Best: When a team spends a seventh-round pick on a draft pick, the hope is that the player will make the team. Bo Jackson, the 183rd overall pick in the 1987 NFL Draft, exceeded all expectations. Jackson might not be the most productive Raider of all-time, but the team got some great value.

Worst: You know the story. The Raiders drafted JaMarcus Russell No. 1 overall in the 2007 draft. Since then, he has crashed and burned out of the league unlike any other player.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699419 Philadelphia Eagles Philadelphia+Eagles NFL

Best: Reggie White was playing in the USFL when the Eagles spent the fourth overall pick in the 1984 NFL Supplemental Draft. White would become one of the NFL’s most-feared pass rusher of all-time. He played in 13 Pro Bowls and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2006.

Worst: In 2001, the Eagles were desperate for a game-changing receiver. They reached in the first round, selecting Freddie Mitchell with the No. 25 overall pick and paid for it. Mitchell never logged more than 500 yards in a season and only scored five TDs in 63 games in Philly.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31698017 Detroit Lions Detroit+Lions NFL

Best: Calvin Johnson or Barry Sanders? You can’t really go wrong here, but Sanders has to be the choice. The Lions chose the elusive running back third overall in the 1989 draft, and during his 10-year career he ran for 15,269 yards (third-leading rusher in history) and 109 TDs. The man was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004.

Worst: Charles Rogers. Need we say more? Rogers was a complete disaster. Here’s some cold-hard numbers to back up the argument. The Lions drafted him No. 2 overall in 2003. He played three seasons in the NFL. He made 36 catches on the grand stage, scoring four touchdowns. Four.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31698016 Cleveland Browns Cleveland+Browns NFL

Best: The Browns selected Ozzie Newsome 23rd overall in the 1978 NFL Draft. In his 13 years with the Browns, he reinvented the tight end position. Newsome holds franchise records and is a Hall of Famer.

Worst: Tim Couch might not be the worst player ever drafted by the Browns, but he never lived up to his lofty expectations. The Browns drafted Couch No. 1 overall in the 1999 draft, and had a very inconsistent career in Cleveland. Who is to blame for Couch’s mediocrity? That’s up for discussion.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31698019 Buffalo Bills Buffalo+Bills NFL

Best: This one is neck and neck between Jim Kelly and Bruce Smith, but the nod will go to Kelly. The Bills spent the 14th pick in the 1983 Draft on Kelly, and he led the franchise to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances.

Worst: The Bills had very high expectations for J.P. Losman, whom they selected 22nd overall in the 2006 NFL Draft. Losman had a solid rookie campaign, but would walk down the road of mediocrity for the rest of his career. He’s clearly one of the franchise’s greatest disappointments.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31698020 Arizona Cardinals Arizona+Cardinals NFL

Best: Is this one even a question? Larry Fitzgerald was selected third overall in the 2004 draft and since then has lived up to every expectation. Fitzgerald has appeared in seven Pro Bowls and led the NFC in receiving yards in 2008.

Worst: Andre Wadsworth might be the worst pick in Cards’ history, but his level of “bust” is significantly helped because of the player who was drafted right before him: Ryan Leaf. Wadsworth, who was selected third overall in the 1998 draft, had a lengthy holdout and never lived up to the six-year, $42 million deal that he was given.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31698021 New York Jets New+York+Jets NFL

Best: A member of the Hall of Fame, Namath led the Jets to a win in Super Bowl III. The Jets haven’t had a great QB since the Namath days, and although he was the first pick in the 1965 AFL Draft, he was worth it.

Worst: Vernon Gholston was a workout warrior and may have stole the show at the combine, but he was a complete disappointment for the Jets. Gholston was the sixth overall pick in the 2008 draft, and never recorded a sack in the three seasons in New York.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31698022 Tennessee Titans Tennessee+Titans NFL

Best: Earl Campbell was the No. 1 pick in the 1978 draft. Thirteen years later he would be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Campbell earned multiple rushing titles, an MVP trophy and ran for nearly 10,000 yards.

Worst: Chris Henry was selected in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft, and later in that season would receive a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He finished his rookie campaign with 119 yards and 31 carries. The next season wasn’t any better as he carried the ball only once for 3 yards. In September of 2009, Henry was released.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31698044 Miami Dolphins Miami+Dolphins NFL

Best: Dan Marino fell to the Dolphins at No. 27 in the 1983 Draft. Over the next 17 seasons, he made the teams that passed on him pay. The Dolphins drafted Ryan Tannehill last season, but before then haven’t spent a first-round pick on a QB.

Worst: Former head coach Cam Cameron spent a first-round pick on kick return specialist Ted Ginn Jr. Although Ginn was supposed to be much more than that, he never lived up to the expectations that were placed on him.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31700392 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tampa+Bay+Buccaneers NFL

Best: Warren Sapp was the anchor of Tampa Bay’s defensive line for nine years. Sapp, who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in August, was a seven-time Pro Bowler. He played on Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl squad in 2002.

Worst: In 1987, the Buccaneers spent their No. 1 overall pick on Vinny Testaverde. The former Miami Hurricane struggled while in Tampa Bay, totaling a 24-48 touchdown-to-interception ratio in six seasons. Testaverde went on to have a lengthy career after his time with the Bucs and played 15 seasons with six other teams.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31698045 St. Louis Rams St.+Louis+Rams NFL

Best: Eric Dickerson burst onto the scene in his rookie season in 1983, running for 1,808 yards and 18 touchdowns. How would you guess he followed it up? Dickerson set the single-season rushing record in his sophomore season, running for 2,105 yards. The Rams spent a No. 2 overall pick on him and got their maximized all of his potential.

Worst: The Rams took a chance on running back with some character issues in 1996, drafting Lawrence Phillips No. 6 overall. Although the Rams still had Jerome Bettis on the roster, the Rams took Phillips anyway. He would be released the next season. What a waste.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31698046 New Orleans Saints New+Orleans+Saints NFL

Best: Hard to argue with Marques Colston here. He was an absolute steal. The Saints took Colston 252nd overall in the 2006 draft, and he remains as the only player left on the roster from that year.

Worst: You’ve heard the tale. Head coach Mike Ditka, who refers to his time in New Orleans as the “worst three years” of his life, ponied up a bevy of picks to move up and draft Ricky Williams. Let’s just say, it didn’t end well. After finishing 3-13, Ditka was fired. Don’t kid yourself, the Williams had a successful career, but this pick handicapped the Saints for several seasons. Just awful.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31700394 Dallas Cowboys Dallas+Cowboys NFL

Best: Troy Aikman faced a lot of pressure as the No. 1 overall pick in 1989. Three Super Bowl wins and several Dallas passing records later, it’s safe to say that Aikman lived up to expectations. He became a Hall of Famer in 2006.

Worst: Mike Sherrard showed some promise in his first season after being taken with the 18th pick in 1986. But an injury cut short his time in Dallas and he never really recovered.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31700393 Pittsburgh Steelers Pittsburgh+Steelers NFL

Best: “Mean” Joe Greene was the No. 4 overall pick in 1969, an eight-time All-Pro, 10-time Pro Bowler, four-time Super Bowl winner and became a Hall of Famer in 1987. Good enough for you?

Worst: Poor Mark Malone. Never fully accepted in the post-Bradshaw era, Malone was taken No. 28 overall in 1980 and to put it lightly, never panned out as a starting quarterback.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31700395 Chicago Bears Chicago+Bears NFL

Best: One word: Sweetness: Walter Payton arrived in Chicago with the fourth pick in 1975 and re-invented how the running back position was played. His grace as a runner led to him being a seven-time All-Pro. He retired as the all-time leader in rushing with 16,726 yards and became a Hall of Fame in 1993.

Worst: Cade McNown was taken 12th overall in 1999, but didn’t do much besides make people upset in the Windy City. His record as a starter? A paltry 3-12. Fail all around.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31700396 New York Giants New+York+Giants NFL

Best: Lawrence Taylor was the 1986 NFL MVP … as a defensive player. He’s a Hall of Famer (1999) and arguably the best and most frightening defensive player ever to step between the lines. The Giants got their money’s worth for their No. 2 pick in 1981.

Worst: Ron Dayne won the Heisman at Wisconsin and went to New York with the No. 11 pick in 2000. After that? Snore. The highlight of his time with the Giants with 770 rushing yards in his rookie year.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31700491 Cincinnati Bengals Cincinnati+Bengals NFL

Best: Anthony Munoz, selected with the No. 3 overall pick in 1980, is the default choice for the greatest player in franchise history. An 11-time Pro Bowler and 11-time All-Pro as a left tackle, Munoz was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1997.

Worst: The Bengals also spent a third overall pick in 1999 on Akili Smith. That didn’t go so well. Smith’s time in Cincinnati ended with a 3-14 record as a starter and was cut after his fourth season.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699589 Washington Redskins Washington+Redskins NFL

Best: There will never be another Darrell Green. Taken No. 28 overall in 1983, Green played 20 SEASONS, all with the Redskins. One of the fastest men to play the game (he supposedly ran a 4.22 in the 40), the cornerback finished with 54 interception over his Hall of Fame career. He was also a seven-time Pro Bowler.

Worst: Remember Heath Shuler? He’s a political animal now, but he was the Redskins’ first-round pick at No. 3 overall in 1994. To make a long story short, he threw a lot of interceptions and incompletions and didn’t last long in the NFL.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699585 Indianapolis Colts Indianapolis+Colts NFL

Best: Peyton Manning gets the nod here. Taken No. 1 overall in 1998, he was a four-time NFL MVP, nine-time All-Pro and won Super Bowl XLI. They better start cutting the bronze for Manning’s bust in Canton.

Worst: The Colts had high hopes for defensive end Steve Emtman when they took him No. 1 overall in 1992. Emtman was never able to stay healthy and was forced to finally retire in 1997.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699586 Minnesota Vikings Minnesota+Vikings NFL

Best: Fran Tarkenton fell to the Vikings with the 29th pick in the third round of the 1961 draft. All told, he made four Super Bowl appearances and revolutionized the QB position as a threat through the air and on the ground.

Worst: D.J. Dozier was the seventh overall pick in 1987. Can you name anything else he did after that? That’s why he’s the worst.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699587 Green Bay Packers Green+Bay+Packers NFL

Best: Paul Hornung won the Heisman Trophy at Notre Dame and was taken No. 1 overall in 1957. In his Hall of Fame career, he won three championships, was a two-time All-Pro and was the 1961 NFL MVP.

Worst: Tony Mandarich, or The Incredible Bulk, was No. 2 overall pick in 1989. Following a lengthy holdout to start his career, Mandarich battled substance abuse during his time with the Packers and never approached his potential or expectations.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699588 Seattle Seahawks Seattle+Seahawks NFL

Best: Cortez Kennedy was the No. 3 overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft. He had a streak of 116 straight games played and was a five-time All-Pro. He was also named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1992 and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012.

Worst: Marcus Tubbs was taken with the No. 23 overall pick in 2004. He never played a full season in his four years with the Seahawks. He was finally released in 2008.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699590 Denver Broncos Denver+Broncos NFL

Best: Terrell Davis didn’t get picked by the Broncos until the sixth round in 1995. But his impact can’t be overstated. In his time with the Broncos, he won two Super Bowls, was a three-time All-Pro and was named the 1998 NFL MVP, when he rushed for 2,008 yards along with 21 touchdowns.

Worst: Ted Gregory with the 26th pick in the 1988 draft and never played a down for the franchise. Listed at 6-1, Gregory didn’t have the size to play defensive tackle and was traded before the end of his first training camp. He played one season with the Saints before his career ended.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699591 Houston Texans Houston+Texans NFL

Best: J.J. Watt in only entering his third NFL season, but what an impact he’s made. The Texans took him with the No. 11 pick in 2011 and have watched him become an All-Pro and Defensive Player of the Year in 2012. If he keeps this pace, we’re going to see him in the Hall of Fame someday.

Worst: David Carr was the franchise’s first ever draft pick, going No. 1 overall in 2002. Generally considered one of the bigger QB busts in many years, Carr was sacked 249 times during his five seasons in Houston. In three of those seasons, he threw more interceptions than touchdown passes. Ouch.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699592 Atlanta Falcons Atlanta+Falcons NFL

Best: If you had to pick one, why not choose linebacker Tommy Nobis, who the Falcons chose with their first pick in franchise history. A five-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, Nobis started his career in Atlanta with a bang, recording 294 combined tackles in his rookie season. His number has been retired by the team.

Worst: Bruce Pickens was the No. 3 overall pick in 1991 and only lasted until 1993 in Atlanta. Two years later, the cornerback’s career was over.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699594 New England Patriots New+England+Patriots NFL

Best: Tom Brady. Tom Brady. Tom Brady. Since being found in the sixth round back in 2000, Brady has won three Super Bowls, been named NFL MVP twice and has been a three-time All-Pro. He even was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2009. He’s guaranteed a spot in the Hall of Fame.

Worst: Andy Katzenmoyer was a much-hyped linebacker when the Patriots took him No. 28 overall in 1999. However, a neck injury derailed his career in 2000 and he never recovered. He was released by the team in 2002.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699593 San Francisco 49ers San+Francisco+49ers NFL

Best: Joe Montana didn’t arrive with much fanfare as the 49ers selected the quarterback in the third round in 1979. So … what happened next? Montana just became a two-time NFL MVP, a six-time All-Pro, an eight-time Pro Bowler and let’s not forget a four-time Super Bowl winner (with three MVPs in those games). Montana is in the pantheon of NFL quarterbacks and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2000.

Worst: The 49ers took Todd Kelly with the 27th pick in 1993, only to see him fail to live up to expectations. He linebacker/defensive end only recorded 5.5 sacks in four years in the league. He was cut by the 49ers after just two seasons.

NFL 5 43 Who are the best and worst all-time draft picks for each team? 31699595 Baltimore Ravens Baltimore+Ravens NFL

Best: Ray Lewis will have a bust waiting for him at the Hall of Fame in just a few years. He came to the Ravens with the 26th pick back in 1996 and took off running. He was a 10-time All-Pro, two-time defensive player of the year and won two Super Bowl during his illustrious career.

Worst: Kyle Boller came to Baltimore with the 19th pick in 2003. To make a long story short, he didn’t do a whole lot with the Ravens. He spent most of his time on the bench or injured and when he did play, never seemed to play better than average.
