NFL 5 800 Top 10 NFL moments of 2010 22381150 COACHES CANNED COACHES+CANNED NFL

Coaches became an endangered species, with the Broncos’ Josh McDaniels and the 49ers’ Mike Singletary receiving in-season sacks. And midway through the regular season, two of the NFL’s most embattled coaches saw their fed-up owners put an end to their misery and that of the fans in Dallas-Fort Worth and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones fired Wade Phillips following a pride-swallowing 45-7 Week 9 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Brett Favre may have saved Brad Childress’ job with the Vikings in 2009, but the aging quarterback also helped torpedo Childress’ employment in 2010. That, and the fact Childress waived Randy Moss without telling owner Zygi Wilf.  Check out more of the best of 2010

NFL 5 800 Top 10 NFL moments of 2010 22395011 RANDY MOSS TRADED AND CUT RANDY+MOSS+TRADED+AND+CUT NFL

Randy Moss’ 13th NFL season has been plenty unlucky for one of the league’s most confounding talents. He played for three teams, was bounced from two clubs and left a wake of disappointment at every stop. Six years after leaving Minnesota via trade to the Oakland Raiders, Moss returned to the Vikings in Week 4 of 2010 when the New England Patriots dumped him in exchange for a third-round draft pick. After Minnesota’s Week 8 loss at New England, Moss hit the waiver wire after exalting his former team and criticizing the Vikings. The Tennessee Titans claimed Moss, who caught only one pass in his first two games with his latest team.

NFL 5 800 Top 10 NFL moments of 2010 22381151 BRETT FAVRE’S DOWNFALL BRETT+FAVRE%26rsquo%3BS+DOWNFALL NFL

The NFL’s only active-playing grandfather has engineered more Will-He-Or-Won’t-He drama in recent seasons than he has winning scoring drives. In 2010, Favre turned 41, turned the Vikings upside down once again as he skipped training camp while contemplating retirement and allegedly turned his cell phone into a lecherous Jenn Sterger dating device. In the midst of a disastrous season — likely his last in the NFL — the injury ravaged Favre has tossed nearly twice as many interceptions as touchdowns and makes Tarvaris Jackson look like a great option as a starter.

NFL 5 800 Top 10 NFL moments of 2010 22395010 MICHAEL VICK BECOMES A GREAT QB MICHAEL+VICK+BECOMES+A+GREAT+QB NFL

He may never win over animal lovers, but quarterback Michael Vick’s 2010 NFL season has been marvelous and his transformation from a me-first, lackadaisical player to a well-prepared, dedicated athlete has been something to behold. Vick assumed command of the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense after Kevin Kolb sustained a Week 1 concussion, and cemented his spot as an elite quarterback and the NFL’s passing leader with a dazzling Week 10 performance against the Washington Redskins. In that game, Vick passed for 333 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for two more in a 59-28 Eagles rout.

NFL 5 800 Top 10 NFL moments of 2010 22395008 HELMET-TO-HELMET CLASH HELMET-TO-HELMET+CLASH NFL

NFL players play a violent game, a fact that became painfully obvious in Week 6 when serious head and neck injuries were sustained by multiple players. Brandon Meriweather, James Harrison and Dunta Robinson all received substantial fines — $50,000 apiece for Meriweather and Robinson, $75,000 for Robinson — as part of the league’s renewed emphasis on policing helmet-to-helmet collisions. Said commissioner Roger Goodell: “We’re not talking about changing the rules. We’re going to increase the discipline.” Player reaction was mixed — many applauded the effort to limit dangerous collisions. Others criticized Goodell and NFL officials for interfering with how they play the game.

NFL 5 800 Top 10 NFL moments of 2010 22391024 CALVIN JOHNSON CATCH CONTROVERSY CALVIN+JOHNSON+CATCH+CONTROVERSY NFL

Week 1 of the 2010 season put the NFL’s already confusing definition of a catch into question yet again. Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson appeared to make a leaping, game-winning touchdown grab with 31 seconds remaining and Detroit trailing the Chicago Bears 19-14. But the replay assistant reviewed the catch — which included Johnson tapping both feet inbounds before falling to the turf — and waved off the touchdown. The reason: The officials concluded Johnson did not maintain possession through the entirety of the catch because he pinned the ball to the ground with his right arm.

NFL 5 800 Top 10 NFL moments of 2010 22395009 PLAYERS STAND AS ONE PLAYERS+STAND+AS+ONE NFL

In a sign of unity prior to the NFL’s regular-season kickoff game on Sept. 9 in New Orleans, players from the Saints and the Vikings raised one finger in a show of solidarity as a union. Since then, team after team has voted unanimously to decertify as members of the NFL Players Association in anticipation of a contentious labor clash with the league’s owners. The NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with its players expires after this season.

Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith are linked forever as the NFL’s all-time leading receiver (1,549 receptions, 22,895 yards, 208 touchdowns) and rusher (18,355 yards, 164 touchdowns). They squared off in epic games between the 49ers and Cowboys, while each won three Super Bowls and earned an MVP trophy from the NFL’s championship contest. Their enshrinement together into the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2010 on Aug. 7 was truly destiny fulfilled.

NFL 5 800 Top 10 NFL moments of 2010 22395007 DONOVAN MCNABB TRADED DONOVAN+MCNABB+TRADED NFL

Was it a bold stroke of genius by Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan to acquire the Eagles’ all-time leader in career victories, pass attempts, pass completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns? Or did the veteran coach and personnel evaluator get a raw deal? At this point, it appears the stunning April 4 trade that sent the six-time Pro Bowler to Washington for a 2010 second-round pick and a conditional pick in 2011 was a crafty transaction by the Eagles, who moved on quite successfully with Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick.

They’re still partying in N’awlins, where the once-beleaguered Saints gave a battered, football-loving region its first Lombardi Trophy and real reason to rejoice. Quarterback Drew Brees earned Super Bowl XLIV MVP honors, passing for 288 yards and two touchdowns and his Saints overcame a 10-point deficit to beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17. New Orleans’ defense limited Peyton Manning to one touchdown in the final three quarters, and punctuated that performance when Tracy Porter returned a Manning interception 74 yards for the game-winning score.
