NFL 5 1160 NFL Week 4: what we learned 30229184 Matt Cassel isn't that bad Matt+Cassel+isn%27t+that+bad NFL

Nor, for that matter, is Donovan McNabb. The opposing quarterbacks for the Chiefs and Vikings had been brutal as their teams started a combined 0-6. Cassel was an efficient 18 for 29 passing Sunday for 260 yards, with one touchdown pass and no interceptions. The mistake-free performance offset last week, when Cassel tossed a game-clinching interception at San Diego. Kansas City converted McNabb's one interception into a field goal. That's about the difference between these two teams.

When the Saints decided enough was enough with the much-hyped but underperforming Bush, they turned to the free agent Sproles, Drew Brees’ former teammate in San Diego, to fill the role of situational back/return threat. Sproles has delivered. As the Saints toyed with the Jaguars, Sproles had 131 yards from scrimmage (75 rushing, 56 receiving) and another 57 on three special teams touches. All this without a Kardashian to be found.

Few first-year head coaches come with the gravitas of the Titans’ Mike Munchak. For one, he’s in the Hall of Fame. For another, he has spent all 30 years of his professional existence with one organization. His rookie status is a testament to his loyalty rather than a result of inexperience. Munchak knows the game from the trenches, and he has the Titans playing tough. They won on the road despite being outgained and losing the time-of-possession battle by nearly 14 minutes. At 3-1, they might be the true surprise team of 2011.

NFL 5 1160 NFL Week 4: what we learned 30229183 It's not always sunny in Philadelphia It%27s+not+always+sunny+in+Philadelphia NFL

The San Francisco 49ers are 3-1 and the Philadelphia Eagles are 1-3. What kind of bizarro season are we watching? The Eagles typically start slow and finish fast under coach Andy Reid, so their 1-2 start wasn't cause for alarm. But a loss at home, to the 49ers, after leading 20-3 at halftime? Letting Frank Gore (pictured) average 8.5 yards a carry? This one was so bad for the so-called Dream Team that we suspect Chris Bosh was crying in the Eagles locker room afterward.

Since their championship days in the 1970s through the contemporary versions, the Steelers have been known for rugged blockers almost as much as their hard hitters on defense. Not this year. The line has been ravaged by injuries, and the cracks are showing. You could find Texans defenders running through those cracks Sunday. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was sacked five times and left Reliant Stadium in a walking boot; the Steelers ran for only 118 yards the loss. Pittsburgh got pushed around, something you rarely see.

NFL 5 1160 NFL Week 4: what we learned 30229180 Torain fits the bill Torain+fits+the+bill NFL

In Week 1, we marveled at the sight of Redskins coach Mike Shanahan calling pass after pass after pass. This week, we see a return to the Shanahan we once knew and loved. Well, liked maybe. Well, tolerated? Well, OK, acknowledged, grudgingly. Shanahan, who regularly turned no-names into 1,000-yard backs in Denver, unleashed Ryan Torain for the first time in 2011 and got 135 yards and a touchdown. The Redskins controlled the clock for 35 minutes to claim a workmanlike road victory and improve to 3-1. Tim Hightower might want to find a comfortable spot on the bench.

The Bills had western New York abuzz with their comeback victories over Oakland and New England as they started the year 3-0. This week, they made the mistake of jumping to a 17-3 lead. So, of course, they lost. Bengals rookie quarterback Andy Dalton overcame two interceptions, including a pick six, to direct two late scoring drives. Cincy won it on a field goal as time expired. Buffalo had only 83 yards rushing, a big reason it couldn't hold that early lead.

The Bears' quarterback is so often exposed in the team's passing scheme, that it appears Martz, the offensive coordinator, values his philosophy over his player. But Martz has gone from winning a Super Bowl to being fired, so he knows where his bread is buttered — in the win column. The Bears got a win against Carolina when Cutler threw for only 102 yards. Matt Forte (pictured) ran for twice that, 205 yards, and the Bears survived the phenom that is Cam Newton. This came a week after Forte was held to two yards in a loss to Green Bay. Martz may be stubborn, but he's not stupid.

The Lions were on the road, against a surging Cowboys team. They are playing their first Monday night game in a decade next week, so they had every reason to be looking ahead. This is where their bubble bursts, right? Sure seemed that way Sunday when they went into halftime down 17 points. Instead, they stole a road victory intercepting two of Tony Romo's passes and returning them for scores, including one by Bobby Carpenter (pictured). The Lions are 4-0 for the first time since 1980. Their last championship season came in 1957. That's a fact they're going to hear more and more this season. But maybe not after February.

Atlanta got a victory Sunday, improving to 2-2. But a victory over the Seahawks, even on the road, is not exactly the most impressive resume-builder. What's more, Atlanta allowed the Seahawks to make a game of it by being outscored by the hosts 21-6 in the second half. Atlanta did, however, get a big day from rookie wideout Julio Jones (11 catches, 127 yards).

With the Chiefs picking up a win Sunday, Miami is one of three 0-4 teams (the Colts are 0-3 and playing Monday). But unlike the Vikings and Rams, who simply scored fewer points than their opponents, the Dolphins also lost starting QB Chad Henne to a shoulder injury in the first quarter at San Diego. Matt Moore came in and threw for 167 yards, but failed to find the end zone and threw a late INT to seal the victory for the Chargers.

Tom Brady (12) was coming off a 4-INT game while the Raiders had knocked off the Jets and were looking to assert themselves as a legit contender when they welcomed New England to the Black Hole on Sunday. Alas, the Raiders' improved defense did make Brady look human at times, but the three-time Super Bowl champ still threw for 226 yards and a pair of scores (without an INT) and the Patriots withstood the challenge, 31-19. Wes Welker continued his tear with nine catches, 158 yards and a TD.

New York has lost its past seven games against Baltimore, and much of the blame for Sunday’s defeat can be laid at the feet of Mark Sanchez (No. 6). The Jets quarterback fumbled the ball four times and also threw an interception. Not that Ravens QB Joe Flacco was particularly stellar either, with a fumble and interception of his own. But the Ravens’ defense was the difference-maker, responsible for three Baltimore touchdowns.
