NFL 5 43 Best comeback attempts in sports history 11438282 Lance Armstrong Lance+Armstrong NFL

The guy had full-on testicular cancer, and that was before any of his seven Tour de France victories! To win just one of these races would've been a miracle, in that it's only the most difficult and strenuous sporting feat outside the triathlon. To win seven of them is out and out ridiculous. This one isn't even close. Tour de Lance takes this 'battle of the comebacks' title by a wide margin.

NFL 5 43 Best comeback attempts in sports history 9774530 Michael Jordan Michael+Jordan NFL Over his 15 seasons in the NBA, Jordan had two comebacks. Only one, however, was truly successful. After winning three straight championships with the Chicago Bulls from 1990-1993, Jordan unexpectedly announced his retirement from basketball and signed a minor league baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox. But a .202 batting average, three home runs and 11 errors with the Birmingham Barons proved Jordan couldn't cut it in baseball, and "His Airness" quickly returned to the Chicago Bulls to win three more NBA titles and two more MVPs from 1995-1998 before retiring for the second time in January of 1999.

NFL 5 43 Best comeback attempts in sports history 9776486 George Foreman George+Foreman NFL Most boxers couldn't win a heavyweight championship after spending 10 years away from the ring. But not Foreman. At the age of 38, Big George announced his comeback to the boxing world and challenged for the heavyweight title in 1991 and 1993, suffering losses in both attempts. But it was in 1994, at the age of 45, where Foreman made history, regaining the heavyweight title he had lost 20 years ago to Muhammad Ali with a 10th-round comeback and eventual KO against Michael Moorer. The victory established Foreman as the oldest boxer to ever win a world heavyweight crown while setting the mark for the longest interval between world championships.

NFL 5 43 Best comeback attempts in sports history 9780738 Ben Hogan Ben+Hogan NFL Ben Hogan won 63 professional golf tournaments, but he might have won more had it not been for a near-fatal car accident that interrupted his career in 1949. Doctors thought Hogan, who suffered a double-fracture of the pelvis, a fractured collar bone, a left ankle fracture, a chipped rib and near-fatal blood clots in the head-on collision with a Greyhound bus, would never walk again. But in 1953, nearly four years after the crash, Hogan put together the greatest season in professional golf history, winning five of the six tournaments he entered and the first three major championships of the year — an accomplishment that would later be called the "Hogan Slam."

NFL 5 43 Best comeback attempts in sports history 9776488 Mario Lemieux Mario+Lemieux NFL

Mario Lemieux may have broken some of Wayne Gretzky's single-season scoring records had he not been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1993, but the three-time MVP showed that cancer wasn't enough to slow him down. When Lemieux returned to the ice following radiation treatment, the Penguins won an NHL-record 17 straight games. Years of dealing with back surgeries and more radiation treatments forced him to retire in 1997 before being inducted into the Hall of Fame. But Lemieux came back again in 2000 after a three-year hiatus and quickly showed his scoring touch with 76 points in only 43 games that year. At 37, he led the league in scoring for most of the 2002-03 season.

NFL 5 43 Best comeback attempts in sports history 9780530 Muhammad Ali Muhammad+Ali NFL There haven't been many athletes who have been suspended for several years and come back to find success in their respective sports, but Ali's career didn't slow down when he did return to the ring. Having his boxing license taken away for three years for refusing to serve in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War, "The Louisville Lip" would later regain his heavyweight title in 1974 by knocking out champion George Foreman in a historic fight in Kinshasa, Zaire, known as "The Rumble In The Jungle." Less than a year later, in his third attempt against Joe Frazier, Ali got revenge against the former champ, winning a grueling 14-round match that would be later called "The Thrilla in Manila."

NFL 5 43 Best comeback attempts in sports history 9780740 Greg LeMond Greg+LeMond NFL LeMond won his first Tour de France at the tender age of 25, but he won two more after being shot in the back by his brother-in-law during a hunting accident in 1987. While he missed the next two Tours in order to recover, LeMond returned to cycling in 1989, and with 37 shotgun pellets in his body — including two in the lining of his heart — he won the Tour de France by a mere eight seconds over Laurent Fignon. The next year, LeMond returned to the top of the podium, claiming the golden jersey for the 1990 Tour de France without ever winning a stage.

NFL 5 43 Best comeback attempts in sports history 9776492 Monica Seles Monica+Seles NFL

Having won the French Open three straight years and both the U.S. Open and Australian Open in consecutive years, Seles was on top of the women's tennis world heading into 1993. But tragedy struck when a fan in Hamburg ran onto the court during a changover and stabbed Seles between the shoulder blades with a boning knife. While it only took a few weeks for her wounds to heal, Seles did not play competitive tennis for more than two years. When she finally returned to the tour in 1995, she showed she could still compete at the highest of levels, winning the 1996 Australian Open against Anke Huber and reaching the U.S. Open final against Steffi Graf later that year.

NFL 5 43 Best comeback attempts in sports history 9776498 Gordie Howe Gordie+Howe NFL It took a chronic wrist problem to force Howe to retire from the NHL after 25 years of service, but after two years in the Red Wings' front office, "Mr. Hockey" wasn't ready to give up his player career just yet. With an operation to improve his wrist, Howe made a return to hockey, except this time it wasn't back to the NHL. Instead, the Hall-of-Fame winger signed with the Houston Aeros of the newly formed World Hockey Association and led his team to consecutive championships before winning the Gary L. Davidson Trophy as the WHA's most valuable player in 1974 at the age of 46.

NFL 5 43 Best comeback attempts in sports history 9776494 Jennifer Capriati Jennifer+Capriati NFL In the early years of her professional tennis career, Capriati showed great promise, becoming the youngest player to ever reach the Wimbledon semifinals and winning the women's singles gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. But with expectations rising, Capriati couldn't handle the pressure, taking a break from tennis before becoming wrapped up in personal and legal troubles that included a shoplifting incident in 1993 and marijuana possession in 1994. Staging a return to the tour in 1996, she steadily rose to recapture the world No. 1 ranking in 2001 after winning the French Open and Australian Open. A year later, Capriati won her third Grand Slam singles crown, defending her title in Melbourne with a thrilling comeback victory over Martina Hingis in the final.

NFL 5 43 Best comeback attempts in sports history 9776490 Dara Torres Dara+Torres NFL One would think that winning nine Olympic medals would be enough for a 40-year-old mother. But it wasn't for this All-American swimmer. After winning five medals (two gold and three bronze) in the 2000 Olympics following a seven-year break from competitive swimming, Torres retired for the second time to start a family. Torres' retirement didn't last long before she jumped back into the pool to win gold in the 100 meter freestyle at the U.S. Nationals 15 months after giving birth to her first child. Three days later, she broke her own American record in the 50 meter freestyle twice. The following year, she competed for a spot in her fifth Olympic games and did more than just qualify for the 2008 version in Beijing. The 41-year-old, in fact, raced to win three silver medals, tying the all-time medal record for a female Olympic swimmer with 12.
