NFL 5 43 Winners and losers from the first round of the NFL Draft 30948836 NFL

Ahh, the NFL Draft. It's an exciting time as college stars find their spots at the pro level. But it isn't all jerseys, tears of joy and bro hugs with Commissioner Roger Goodell. Some teams and players make out better than others. Let's look at the first-round winners and losers. — Ross Jones and Sid Saraf | Draft Tracker | Video Central | Draft Home

NFL 5 43 Winners and losers from the first round of the NFL Draft 30948821 Winner: Dallas Cowboys Winner%3A+Dallas+Cowboys NFL

Owner Jerry Jones needed to do something to upgrade his porous secondary. Mission accomplished. By trading into the No. 6 pick, the Cowboys were able to nab elite LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne. Dallas now can pair him with offseason free-agent acquisition Brandon Carr. It's fair to say that Jones got what he wanted. | Video: Claiborne at No. 6 | Draft tracker | Video Central | Draft Home

NFL 5 43 Winners and losers from the first round of the NFL Draft 30948828 Loser: Courtney Upshaw Loser%3A+Courtney+Upshaw NFL

Although Upshaw was named defensive MVP of the 2012 BCS National Championship Game, he still is wondering where he will play next season in the NFL. Upshaw, who played four years at Alabama, dominated competition and was a force in the Senior Bowl. He was once considered a Top 15 pick, but late-risers Bruce Irvin (Seahawks), Chandler Jones (Patriots), Whitney Mercilus (Texans) and Shea McClellin (Bears) were taken ahead of him. | Draft Tracker | Video Central | Draft Home

NFL 5 43 Winners and losers from the first round of the NFL Draft 30948827 Winner: Indianapolis Colts Winner%3A+Indianapolis+Colts NFL

It wasn't a secret, but the Colts did take Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick. Indy goes from the greatness of Peyton Manning to what it hopes is future greatness in the Stanford star. It's a new era, and the Colts are eager to get started. | Video: Luck at No. 1 | Draft Tracker | Video Central | Draft Home

NFL 5 43 Winners and losers from the first round of the NFL Draft 30948825 Loser: Seattle Seahawks Loser%3A+Seattle+Seahawks NFL

The Seahawks reached again in the first round. Although the future can’t be predicted, it’s likely West Virginia linebacker Bruce Irvin would’ve been available in the third round, but Seattle took him in the middle of the first. Last year Seattle notoriously used its No. 25 pick on Alabama tackle James Carpenter, who at the time wasn’t rated as a first-round talent. Irvin, who dropped out of high school and has spent time in jail, recently was arrested and charged with destruction of property. | Irvin at No. 15 | Draft Tracker | Video Central | Draft Home

NFL 5 43 Winners and losers from the first round of the NFL Draft 30948823 Winner: Boise State Winner%3A+Boise+State NFL

Boise State isn't just about cute blue turf anymore. Want proof the Broncos are a national power? They just put two players in the first round of the draft. Running back Doug Martin (left) heads to Tampa Bay, and defensive end Shea McClellin has a new home in Chicago. Is this the start of a trend? | Video: Martin at No. 31 | Draft Tracker | Video Central | Draft Home

NFL 5 43 Winners and losers from the first round of the NFL Draft 30948820 Loser: Miami Dolphins Loser%3A+Miami+Dolphins NFL

The Dolphins gave their fans hope by taking quarterback Ryan Tannehill, but their hand was forced after having such a disappointing offseason. After whiffing on quarterbacks Matt Flynn and Peyton Manning in free agency, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland had to find a face of the franchise. Unfortunately for them, Tannehill will be thrown into action immediately and won’t be given the proper time to develop, as he has only 19 starts at the college level. | Video: Tannehill at No. 8 | Draft Tracker | Video Central | Draft Home

NFL 5 43 Winners and losers from the first round of the NFL Draft 30948822 Winner: Brandon Weeden Winner%3A+Brandon+Weeden NFL

Sure, he's old for a rookie at age 28. But who cares? The Oklahoma State quarterback beat the odds and made it into the first round, drafted by the Browns with the 22nd pick. Don't think he'll be there to hold a clipboard, either. Weeden will get a chance to compete and beat out incumbent starting QB Colt McCoy. | Video: Weeden at No. 22 | Draft Tracker | Video Central | Draft Home

NFL 5 43 Winners and losers from the first round of the NFL Draft 30948826 Loser: Kansas City Chiefs Loser%3A+Kansas+City+Chiefs NFL

The Chiefs have drafted a defensive lineman in the first round three times in the last five years. Although Kansas City picked workout warrior Dontari Poe with the 11th overall pick, he did struggle at times against Conference USA competition. Poe flashed his freakish athleticism in February’s NFL Scouting Combine, running a 4.98 40-yard dash and repping 225 pounds on the bench press 44 times. | Video: Poe at No. 11 | Draft Tracker | Video Central | Draft Home

NFL 5 43 Winners and losers from the first round of the NFL Draft 30948805 Winner: A.J. Jenkins Winner%3A+A.J.+Jenkins NFL

Nobody figured this Illinois wide receiver for a first-round pick. But voila, there he is. The 49ers present an excellent situation for the youngster to learn his craft with a Super Bowl contender. He'll also be mentored by such luminaries as coach Jim Harbaugh and receiving legend Randy Moss. First-round money can't hurt, either. | Jenkins at No. 30 | Draft Tracker | Video Central | Draft Home

NFL 5 43 Winners and losers from the first round of the NFL Draft 30948824 Loser: Justin Blackmon Loser%3A+Justin+Blackmon NFL

Blackmon went fifth overall and he’s a loser? It's hard to believe, but the two-time Biletnikoff Award winner is going to Jacksonville, a place where they hang tarps over upper-deck seating to reduce stadium capacity and avoid non-sellout TV blackouts. New head coach Mike Mularkey wants to bring the aerial assault to Jacksonville, but quarterback Blaine Gabbert struggled mightily in his rookie season and may continue to do so with a moth-eaten offensive line. Blackmon could be in for a rough slog. | Blackmon at No. 5 | Draft Tracker | Video Central | Draft Home
