NFL 5 43 2011 NFL Scouting Combine winners 29014002 The big winners are ... The+big+winners+are+... NFL

The 2011 NFL Scouting Combine is now in the books. As is the case every year, there are players who stand out above the rest. Some names you may know, but some players you probably never have heard of. Here’s an inside look at the top 10 performances during the workouts. — Adam Caplan

NFL 5 43 2011 NFL Scouting Combine winners 29011028 Dontay Moch, DE/OLB, Nevada Dontay+Moch%2C+DE%2FOLB%2C+Nevada NFL

You would be hard-pressed to find any player who helped himself more than Moch. Thought to be a middle-rounds selection, Moch really could fly up draft boards after his Combine performance. He posted 4.44 seconds in the 40-yard dash, which would be a very solid time for a wide receiver. Moch also posted the best Combine numbers of any defensive lineman in the vertical jump (42 inches) and broad jump (10-feet-8). Now teams will have to go back and do two things: figure out which position he fits in best, outside linebacker or defensive end, and see if his game tape matches up with his Combine display. That’s one of the hardest things for a personnel evaluator to figure out.

NFL 5 43 2011 NFL Scouting Combine winners 29011033 Julio Jones, WR, Alabama Julio+Jones%2C+WR%2C+Alabama NFL

No one had any doubt that Jones was the second-rated wide receiver coming into the Combine. But what scouts wanted to know is how fast he could run. Some personnel evaluators pegged him to be a mid-4.5 guy, but Jones ran an outstanding 4.39 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He also caught the ball quite well in drills. But perhaps his best accomplishment was his Combine-best 11-feet-3 in the broad jump. Oh, and he did all of this reportedly on a broken foot. Any team that wants Jones must be comfortable with his situation by draft time. Expect him to go through a battery of tests before the draft.

NFL 5 43 2011 NFL Scouting Combine winners 29011031 Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU Patrick+Peterson%2C+CB%2C+LSU NFL

He came in talking some smack about running in the 4.2-second range in the 40-yard dash — and came very close to it. The amazing thing about Peterson is that he runs as well as he does for a guy his size (6-feet, 219 pounds). Peterson posted a blistering 4.34 in the 40, which placed him second overall among players at all positions. He also finished fourth overall in the 60-yard shuttle (11.01 seconds). Peterson already had solidified himself as a top-10 pick coming into the Combine, so give him credit for participating. And now he could go in the top five.

NFL 5 43 2011 NFL Scouting Combine winners 29011032 Virgil Green, TE, Nevada Virgil+Green%2C+TE%2C+Nevada NFL

Green’s senior numbers were solid, so his performance at the Combine would come down to how athletic he looked — and man, did he look good. Green posted a very solid 40-yard dash time (4.64 seconds), great vertical jump (42-1/2 inches) and also looked very fluid during drills. Green had anywhere from a third- to fourth-round grade from teams, but his performance could force many of those teams to go back to see if his workout matches up with his game tape.

NFL 5 43 2011 NFL Scouting Combine winners 29006050 Sam Acho, DE, Texas Sam+Acho%2C+DE%2C+Texas NFL

The underrated defensive lineman had a terrific set of practices during Senior Bowl week and followed that up with a great performance during the game. So Acho was riding pretty high coming into the Combine — and he’ll come out of it riding a bit higher. Not only did he post a great 40-yard dash time (4.68 seconds) for a defensive lineman, but he also posted great times in the short shuttle (4.32 seconds) and three-cone drill (6.69 seconds). Acho is riding a lot of momentum with less than two months left until the draft.

NFL 5 43 2011 NFL Scouting Combine winners 29011034 Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska Prince+Amukamara%2C+CB%2C+Nebraska NFL

The only question about him coming into the Combine was how fast he would run. Amukamara (6-feet, 206 pounds) has good size but never has been known for his speed. However, he posted unofficial 40-yard dash times of 4.37 seconds and 4.44 seconds. He was thought to be a potential top-15 or top-10 selection, and nothing that went on during Tuesday’s workout will change that.

NFL 5 43 2011 NFL Scouting Combine winners 29011035 Von Miller, DE/OLB, Texas A&M Von+Miller%2C+DE%2FOLB%2C+Texas+A%26amp%3BM NFL

NFL personnel evaluators knew that Miller probably would run well. His 4.53-second 40-yard dash time was about as good as Miller could hope for. That time actually would be pretty solid for a running back. Miller looked pretty fluid in most drills, which was expected. The best thing he might have done, according to personnel sources, is put on nine pounds of muscle since Senior Bowl week in late January.

NFL 5 43 2011 NFL Scouting Combine winners 28999120 Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas Ryan+Mallett%2C+QB%2C+Arkansas NFL

His Combine week got off to a bad start in front of the media. Mallett did nothing to dispel the vicious rumors about him and surprisingly didn’t offer a strong denial. Instead he kind of laughed off the questions. He’ll need to interview well with teams leading up to the draft. But his throwing performance Sunday was unmistakable. As expected, Mallett displayed incredible arm strength. If you follow him at all, you would expect Mallett to throw well; that wasn’t a surprise. He also showed pretty good touch on his passes to the sidelines. You would expect that from him without anyone in coverage.

NFL 5 43 2011 NFL Scouting Combine winners 29011036 Edmond Gates, WR, Abilene Christian Edmond+Gates%2C+WR%2C+Abilene+Christian NFL

For those who follow the draft closely, you probably have heard of him. Gates performed well during the first day of practices during Senior Bowl week, but he suffered a hamstring injury that curtailed the rest of his practices. Gates (6-feet, 192 pounds) has decent size, but he’s known in scouting circles for his speed and underrated hands. Gates ran a blistering 4.37-second 40-yard dash and also posted solid vertical and broad jumps.

NFL 5 43 2011 NFL Scouting Combine winners 28999121 Buster Skrine, CB, Tennessee-Chattanooga Buster+Skrine%2C+CB%2C+Tennessee-Chattanooga NFL

Raise your hand if you have heard of this guy. Since none of you have, you will start to hear about him now after what he accomplished. Skrine (5-feet-10, 186 pounds), who posted an unheard of 4.29 seconds in the 40-yard dash, is ranked No. 24 at cornerback with NFL Draft Scout, but he will move up because of that posted time. He figures to handle a special teams return role at the next level because of his elite speed.
