Is it a good thing when players get in scuffles during training camp? Absolutely.
While there is a fine line between developing a nasty side and becoming a penalty-attracting machine, intensity and competition should be the two highest priorities during this time.
Although Green Bay’s preseason storylines so far has been the devastating injury to left tackle Brian Bulaga and the temporary setback to wide receiver Jordy Nelson, the frustration has finally boiled over. Several scuffles have emerged and the players are getting into it with each other.
Hey, I get it. It’s football. Things get chippy when the pads are on and training camp is a hyper-competitive environment as young players are trying to prove to the decision makers that they belong.
Let’s take a look at who was squaring off at Packers practice this morning:
Jermichael Finley vs. Jarvis Reed
How do you get the coaches attention? Maybe get into it with the team’s franchise tight end. That’s what rookie Jarvis Reed did this morning. Reed, who is an undrafted rookie from Prairie View A&M, is doing just about anything to survive the first cut-down list when each team must whittle their roster from 90 to 75. Finley is set to make nealy $9 million in 2013 while Reed still doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page (true story).
Greg Van Roten vs. Rob Francois
Oh yeah, look at these two guys battle. Greg Van Roten appeared in seven games with the Packers during his rookie season in 2012. Rob Francois is a Super Bowl champion and a member of the Packers since 2009. These boys know how to use their leverage.
Sam Barrington vs. T.J. Lang
Sam Barrington is a seventh-round draft pick and from the looks of this video, he’s looking to make a name for himself. Several Packers had to hold the rookie back after he got into it with veteran guard T.J. Lang.
The Packers play the Cardinals Friday. It’s about damn time.
