It’s not often you see a quarterback complete a pass from the 1-yard line without finding the end zone. It’s even rarer that you see that quarterback complete that pass to himself. But
, the Buffalo Bills castoff starting in place of the injured Jake Locker in Tennessee, did just that midway through the second quarter Sunday against Kansas City. As you can see above, Fitzpatrick’s pass on 2nd-and-goal from the 1 was deflected back into his own arms by a Chiefs defensive lineman. And because Fitzpatrick is not exactly fleet of foot, he was unable to find the end zone after snagging the second catch of his career. (He also caught one of his own deflected passes during the fourth quarter of
a 2008 game
.) Fitzpatrick was stymied again on the next play, and on 4th-and-goal from the 1, Jackie Battle was stuffed at the goal line for a turnover on downs. There probably isn’t a play or sequence of plays that better sums up Ryan Fitzpatrick’s star-crossed career than this. Fortunately, he’ll always have that Harvard education to fall back on.
