News: Herron has signed his one-year free-agent tender. He is expected to be joined in the backfield by the recently signed Frank Gore and Vick Ballard, who has missed most of the last two seasons with injuries.
Impact: The former Bengals' practice squad player became Indy's starter in the playoffs, replacing Trent Richardson. After running 78 times for 351 yards with one touchdown and catching 21 passes for 173 yards in the regular season, Herron ran 45 times for 170 yards and two TDs in three playoff games. He also caught 23 passes for 128 yards, setting a postseason franchise record by a running back.
News: Though he hasn't been cleared to run yet, Mathis (Achilles) said Tuesday that he expects to be ready for the beginning of training camp, Alex Marvez of FOX Sports 1 reports.
Impact: The news comes just one week after Colts owner Jim Irsay suggested that Mathis likely wouldn't be back from the injury until November. There's still plenty of time between both training camp and the start of the regular season for Mathis' status to be further clarified, and more information should become available as he begins to engage in rehab activities over the next several weeks. Even if Mathis is able to recover in time for Week 1, it's difficult to imagine him having the same kind of impact as a pass rusher now that he'll be entering his age-34 season.
News: Brown signed a one-year contract with the Colts on Tuesday and is expected to compete for the No. 4 wide receiver role, ESPN's Adam Caplan reports.
Impact: A third-round draft pick back in 2011, Brown has never caught more than 41 passes in a season. Injuries have been part of the problem, but he also failed to take advantage of the opportunities that came his way. With T.Y. Hilton, Andre Johnson and Donte Moncrief assumed to be Indy's top three wideouts, Brown will compete with a group that includes Duron Carter and Griff Whalen for the fourth spot on the depth chart.
News: The Colts have signed free agent receiver Vincent Brown. Terms of the deal were not available.
Impact: San Diego took Brown in the third round of the 2011 draft. He played in 37 games with the Chargers and Oakland Raiders, making 16 starts and catching 72 passes for 919 yards with three TDs. Brown missed all of 2012 with an ankle injury.
