According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, not a single top quarterback prospect in the 2017 NFL Draft class bombed the Wonderlic test at the NFL Combine. Miami's Brad Kaaya received the highest score with a 34, while Clemson star Deshaun Watson's 20 was the lowest score of the group.
On Monday's episode of "The Herd", Colin Cowherd questioned whether NFL teams should be using the Wonderlic scores to affect their big board rankings.
Wonderlic scores don't make or break a quarterback, but they do have some significance
“I don’t care about the Wonderlic outside of quarterback, and it wouldn’t be the standard by which I would base everything, but it’s a piece of information. If I had two quarterbacks that I both liked and one got a 36 like Aaron Rodgers and one got a 10 like Jeff George, I’d take the guy with a 36.
"Information and data is valuable, as long as you take it in context. If you look at the guys in the NFL right now that are very good at the line of scrimmage - Aaron Rodgers, big [Wonderlic] score. Tom Brady, big score. Eli Manning, big score. Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, very good scores."
Some NFL legends have had horrendous scores
"Dan Marino was great and had raw talent, but Dan Marino did not test well on it. Vince Young was awful on it. Tim Tebow was below where I thought he should be, and I had a source in Denver that said he doesn’t, at the line of scrimmage, work as quickly upstairs as we’d like.
"It’s not the be-all, end-all. You can have so much raw talent like Dan Marino [that] you could overcome some other things. In the end, it’s a piece of information. And if Vince Young gets a six and I like Vince Young, and I like another guy that gets a 36, it could be one of the [factors].
"Never forget: Jeff George, many believe, had the best arm in league history. He got a 10 on the Wonderlic, and in the end his career fell apart because he couldn’t get along with people, couldn’t take the temperature of the room and made a lot of horrible throws. It’s not everything, but why can’t I look at it for something?"
