News: Williams was released by the Eagles on Tuesday, Phil Sheridan of ESPN.com reports.
Impact: The 30-year-old Williams was a 16-game starter for the Eagles in both 2013 and 2014, claiming five interceptions and 126 total tackles during that time. However, with the Eagles ranking last in 2013 and next-to-last in 2014 in terms of passing yards allowed, Williams' high cap number was no longer tenable. As a result, the Eagles appear set to make upgrading their secondary a top priority in the offseason, as fellow starting defensive backs Bradley Fletcher and Nate Allen are headed for free agency and aren't expected to be retained. Williams probably still has a place in the league, but he may have to settle for a nickelback role with his next team following his ignominious run as a starter with the Eagles.
