News: Smith signed a one-year contract with the Rockets on Thursday, Yahoo! Sports reports.
Impact: Although Isaiah Canaan has a year in the Rockets' system, Smith is the frontrunner to replace Jeremy Lin as Patrick Beverley's primary backup point guard. With four NBA seasons under his belt, Smith is coming off the highest usage of his career, after averaging 3.7 points (on 42.3 percent shooting), a career-best 2.6 assists, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.7 steals in 14 minutes across 70 games with the Suns.

News: Smith was waived by the Suns on Tuesday, the Suns' official site reports.
Impact: Smith played a reserve role behind Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe in 2013-14, and with the recent addition of Isaiah Thomas, his playing time was on the verge of becoming even more limited. It's definitely possible he'll wind up earning a roster spot with another team, but unless he's able to earn a more sufficient role he's unlikely to hold too much value in standard leagues.

News: Ariza has agreed to a four-year, $32 million deal with the Rockets, Sam Amick of USA Today Sports reports.
Impact: After striking out on Chris Bosh, the Rockets have moved onto Plan B and will add one of the most versatile wings in the league. An excellent defender, Ariza started 77 games for the Wizards last season, averaging 14.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.9 three-pointers per game. He also shot 45.6 percent from the field and a career-high 40.7 percent from beyond the arc. Paying Ariza an average of $8 million per season will enable the Rockets to still match Dallas' offer for swingman Chandler Parsons, though it's unknown at this time whether they intend to do so. If Parsons returns, he and Ariza would likely split time at small forward, while Parsons could slot in as a stretch-four.

After the dust settles, Gee will be looking for new employment under a new NBA franchise as an unrestricted free agent.
