Mills left off Australia’s roster for upcoming FIBA tournament

Patty Mills is arguably the best outside shooter in Australian history. He's a terrific point guard who can capably defend the world's best ball-handlers, too.

None of this stopped Australia from surprisingly leaving Mills off their roster for the upcoming FIBA Oceana Championships. Here's the San Antonio Express-News with a possible explanation:

"With guidance from the Spurs, Mills reportedly chose to skip upcoming warmup games against Slovenia and Lithuania in order to continue rehabbing his right shoulder, which required surgery last summer that forced him to miss the first half of the 2014-15 NBA season. Mills, 26, has been a key player for Australia in recent years, averaging 14.2 points at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and leading all players at the London Games in 2012 at 21.2 per game. Even without him, however, the Boomers should be fine, having won 18 of 20 Oceania Championships."

Mills is obviously still talented enough to star on that team, but his commitment to the NBA and San Antonio is a bit more important at the moment.

Understandably so.
