In today’s DRS, after a surprising start, could the Houston Rockets be the NBA Cinderella team of the 2016-17 season?
The Houston Rockets have jumped out to what some would call a surprisingly positive start. Surprising because they began the season with a road heavy schedule, had several new roster members, a new head coach and a star playing a completely different role.
No matter the season. No matter the sport. No matter the league. Every year, the sports world witnesses a team that exceeds expectations and becomes the Cinderella story of their league.
Normally, the Cinderella title is tagged on a collegiate team who unexpectedly wins a national title. Yet, this adjective is the only word to describe a stunning run by a professional team.
Last season, the NBA saw its own version of a Cinderella story with the Portland Trail Blazers. Despite losing LaMarcus Aldridge to free agency, along with 5 of their top 6 players (Nic Batum, Robin Lopez, Wes Matthews, Arron Afflalo) the Blazers still managed to advance to the second round of the playoffs.
By going 3-1 last week, the Rockets, now 9-5 are skyrocketing up the standings and the all-important power rankings. In the fifth week of the NBA, five national sites have the Rockets in the top 10. The Rockets earned quality wins against the Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons, and Portland Trail Blazers. They bested the Pistons, who had been lights out on their home court, in the motor city.
Although it’s still too early to consider the Rockets a Cinderella team, it’s never too soon to get the latest scoop on James Harden’s newest shoe.
In paying homage to his boyhood NBA aspirations, adidas now presents the Harden Vol. 1 “Imma Be a Star.” As a freshman in high school, James Harden wrote his dreams onto paper with a simple note promising his mom that he would eventually be just that, a star. Fast forward to today, and the now-point guard for the Houston Rockets is one of the deadliest scorers in the game and one of the league’s best players.
Harden and DeRozan, who will face each other Wednesday at Toyota Center, were born a few weeks and a few miles apart and grew up competing against one another. On Monday, Harden said of the Raptors’ shooting guard, “That’s my bro,” adding that he has especially enjoyed DeRozan’s run to be among the league’s top scorers.
