Charlotte Hornets Rumors: Team Shopping for Help at Point Guard

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 9:44 p.m. ET

With Ramon Sessions recent injury, the Charlotte Hornets are reportedly searching for help in the form of a backup point guard.

According to Keith Smith, “Hornets are shopping for help at PG w/ Sessions out 4-6 weeks. They will try and get by with Roberts at backup PG if they can’t find it.” Even though the Charlotte Hornets recently signed Ray McCallum to a 10-day contract, they have no other long-term options outside of Brian Roberts with Ramon out.

Sessions had surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee. The Hornets’ backup point guard will be out for an extended period of time so it makes sense that the team is looking for a viable replacement. Before sustaining the injury, Ramon was underwhelming in his role with Charlotte.

The 30-year old is averaging career-lows in points per game at 6.2, assists per game with 2.6 and rebounds per game at 1.5. Also, his shooting was below average at a mark of 38% from the field and 33.95 from the three-point line. Despite those poor stats, Sessions served as Kemba Walker‘s backup for 50 games and even started in a match that Walker missed.

More from Swarm and Sting

While Charlotte signed McCallum for point guard depth, they haven’t made any indication that he could stick around longer than his 10-day deal. The Hornets need some sort of improvement at the backup point guard spot because both Roberts and Sessions have been uninspiring up to this point. It is no surprise that they are looking for an upgrade.

Although it is unclear who the team is targeting, the fact that they are searching speaks to the struggles/ lack of production they’ve had from their point guards off the bench this season. With an all-star caliber player in Kemba starting, Charlotte needs a better backup to play behind Walker. They need a player to give them quality minutes with the second unit and not have too much of a dropoff when Kemba leaves the game.

If the Hornets were to make a trade, it would have to come before the February 23rd NBA trade deadline. Rich Cho is surely trying to make a deal before then. More names will start to appear as it draws closer as more teams will become desperate to move their unwanted pieces.

We’ll have to wait and see if anything comes of these rumors. It is unclear who the Charlotte Hornets are interested in moving in order to acquire a quality backup. One thing that is clear, is that they need a better point guard off the bench going forward.
