Knight: Knicks should retain Woodson
Hall of Famer Bob Knight, who coached Mike Woodson at Indiana University, said Knicks owner James Dolan would be "an absolute idiot" if he didn't retain the interim coach beyond this season.
"I think they'd be idiotic if they didn't keep him," said Knight, who was in New Orleans as an analyst working the Final Four. "The players have really responded to Mike.
"The [Jeremy] Lin kid responded to the chance he had under Mike, the team's gone 9-2, and they haven't had anything remotely close to that performance over 11 games. You'd have to be an absolute idiot not to see all of that. Not that the NBA is without its absolute idiots.
"It's obvious what's happened with the Knicks since he took over," Knight said.
The 54-year-old Woodson was promoted to head coach on an interim basis to replace Mike D'Antoni, who abruptly resigned March 14.
The Knicks are 1 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but will be without point guard Jeremy Lin at least until the second round of the playoffs. Star forward Amar'e Stoudemire remains sidelined with a bulging disk in his lower back.
