NBA Draft-Pick 23
NEW YORK (AP)With the 23rd pick in the first round of the 2004 NBA draft,
the Portland Trail Blazers select Sergei Monya.
Position: Shooting guard/Small forward.
Weight: 220 pounds.
Club: CSKA Moscow.
DOB: April 15, 1983.
Scouting report: Perhaps the most NBA-ready international prospect. Teammateof Viktor Khryapa - who was selected one pick ahead - on CSKA Moscow of theEuropean league. Biggest assets are athleticism, intensity and leadership.Works hard and plays good team defense. Can match up with shooting guards andsmall forwards. Consistent mid-range jumper, and has improved accuracy from3-point range. Speed and quickness allow him to excel in transition. Somescouts believe he needs to work on ball-handling, but didn't get much of achance to put the ball on the floor with CSKA. A spot-up shooter who couldbenefit from learning how to create space with the dribble. Seems to lack courtvision, and sometimes spends too much time on the perimeter. Hasn't shown theability to penetrate, but has the athleticism to. Extensive experience in theEuropean league.
