NBA 73 43 Sports streaks that met their ends 22172053 One hurdle too many One+hurdle+too+many NBA

There was a certain numerical symmetry to Edwin Moses' 122-race win streak in the 400-meter hurdles. It ended after nine years, nine months and nine days. But perhaps the greatest mark of how dominant Moses was during the streak -- which included two world-record runs, an Olympic gold medal, three World Cup titles and two World Championships -- was the race in which the streak finally ended. In that race, Moses tripped at the last hurdle and still only lost to fellow American Danny Harris by .13 second.

"Alexander the Great" not only hadn't lost for 13 years when he faced American Rulon Gardner in the gold-medal super heavyweight match at the 2000 Olympics, but he also hadn't given up a single point in six years of elite international competition. That all ended on Sept. 27, 2000. A single point -- earned by virtue of an early escape -- was all Gardner needed to end one of the greatest streaks in sports history and claim gold.

On Sept. 20, 1998, Cal Ripken finally took a day off. The Orioles legend decided to sit out the final home game of the Orioles season, so as to avoid any offseason controversy over his playing status, long after breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played record. After the first out of the game was recorded -- with rookie Ryan Minor taking over at third for Ripken -- the Baltimore crowd acknowledged the Ironman with a standing ovation.

Orel Hershiser came into his final start of the 1988 regular season needing 10 scoreless innings to break the record held by Don Drysdale, so it seemed all but a certainty that history would need to wait until Opening Day of 1989 to be made. But the Dodgers hitters came through (so to speak), and L.A. and San Diego were tied 0-0 after nine. Hershiser threw his 59th consecutive scoreless inning in the 10th and the record was his. A good thing, too, seeing as how Hershiser's streak ended in the very first inning of his first start the following season.

Since the Chase for the Sprint Cup's inception in 2004, NASCAR has crowned a champion seven times, and for five seasons (2006-10), the only winner was Jimmie Johnson. But the defending champ struggled in 2011 and, in the second-to-last race of the season, he was officially eliminated in his bid for title No. 6.

For 56 games stretching over more than two months of the 1946 season, Yankees star Joe DiMaggio ended each night in the same fashion -- with at least one hit in the box score. In the process, he hit .409 and inspired a hit song (the Les Brown Orchestra's "Joltin' Joe DiMaggio"). Cleveland's Al Smith and Jim Bagby Jr. combined to end the streak on July 17, denying DiMaggio a $10,000 bonus Heinz had promised him if he were able to match the "57" emblazoned on its ketchup bottles. Too bad. But ownership of arguably one of sports' most unassailable records is a pretty nice bonus.

By itself, Rafael Nadal's 31-match winning streak at Roland Garros was sufficiently impressive. But when you consider those were his first 31 matches at the French Open? Well, that takes the streak to a whole new level. Which is perhaps why the end to Nadal's reign in France was so stunning. While seeking a record fifth straight French title, Nadal was upset by Robin Soderling, who at the time had yet to win a clay-court title and had never advanced beyond the fourth round of a major.

In 1953, Oklahoma dropped its season opener to Notre Dame, then followed up that disappointment with a tie against Pitt. The Sooners then proceeded to win their next 47 games -- a streak that lasted 1,512 days and included a pair of national championships. The Irish would prove to be the only team capable of beating Bud Wilkinson's (pictured) team. On Nov. 16, 1957, Notre Dame withstood several early scoring opportunities by the Sooners before finally managing a 20-play, 80-yard scoring drive for the game's only score in the 7-0 stunner.

Two streaks came to an end in the 1974 national basketball semifinals -- UCLA's run of 38 straight NCAA tournament wins and the Bruins' seven consecutive titles. So it's only fitting it took two overtimes to do it. N.C. State needed to erase an 11-point, second-half deficit to force the first overtime, then had to come back from seven down in the second OT to spring the 80-77 upset over John Wooden's Bruins.

On Jan. 9, 1972 -- long before he was making history with the Lakers as part of five NBA championship teams during the 1980s -- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was ending a piece of Lakers history. As a 24-year-old member of the Milwaukee Bucks, Abdul-Jabbar scored 39 points and pulled down 20 rebounds, severely outplaying Wilt Chamberlain (15 and 12) as the Bucks ended the Lakers' 33-game win streak with a 120-104 rout.

Wilt Chamberlain might have been the individual player most thwarted by the Celtics' run of eight straight championships between 1959 and 1966. The Celtics had just won the first of those titles when Chamberlain entered the league for the 1959-60 season -- and proceeded to watch his team lose to Boston in the postseason in five of the next seven seasons. The Stilt finally got past the Celtics in 1968, as his 76ers team ended Boston's run with a 4-1 series win in the Eastern Conference finals, with Chamberlain putting up a line of 29 points, 36 rebounds and 13 assists in the fifth and deciding game.
