NBA 73 43 The worst playoff games of the best NBA players 31740563 Carmelo Anthony Carmelo+Anthony NBA

In Game 4 in Boston, Carmelo Anthony kept chucking and chucking and chucking with sidekick J.R. Smith suspended after introducing Celtics guard Jason Terry to his elbow. Unfortunately, few of the shots went in. 'Melo’s final line: a misleading 36 points on 10-of-35 shooting, including an 0-for-7 mark from 3. The showing was historically bad, with only one other such scoring line in NBA playoff history (more on one of those later).

In Game 5, Smith returned, but things didn’t get much better for Anthony, who went 8-of-24 from the field, incuding another 0-fer (0-for-5 this time) from long distance, scoring 22 points.

In the Game 1 loss to the Indiana Pacers, 'Melo's cold spell continued as he went 10-of-28 from the floor.

But every player — even the best players — have a bad game every once in a while… right? Right …? We figured even the best of all time can flop in the playoffs, so we decided to take a look. Last year, FOX Sports published a list of the 10 greatest players in NBA history, and today we sought out to find each player’s worst playoff game. -- Sam Gardner

NBA 73 43 The worst playoff games of the best NBA players 31743102 Michael Jordan Michael+Jordan NBA

Remember way back at the beginning of this list, when we said Carmelo Anthony’s Game 4 performance was one of the most inefficient in NBA playoff history? The other culprit? None other than Michael Jordan, who couldn’t buy a bucket in Game 4 of the 1997 Eastern Conference Finals against Miami. In an 87-80 loss, Jordan had a ‘Melo-esque line: 29 points on 9-of-35 shooting, including an 0-for-8 mark from 3. It’s almost as though Anthony was channeling Jordan with his Game 4 showing. But that’s about the only way he’ll ever channel MJ, whose disaster of a game was a certifiable fluke. The same can’t be said for ‘Melo.

NBA 73 43 The worst playoff games of the best NBA players 31743099 Magic Johnson Magic+Johnson NBA

Magic Johnson seemed virtually incapable of having a bad game in the playoffs, but in Game 1 of the 1987 Western Conference Finals against Seattle, Johnson looked human during a 92-87 Lakers win. Johnson scored 19 points, thanks to nine free throws, but his 5-of-18 mark from the floor was arguably the worst of his playoff career (though a 3-of-12 night against Utah the following year was a close second). In the long run, the dud meant little though. LA went on to sweep Seattle and Johnson averaged 26.2 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds per game in a 4-2 Finals win over Boston.

NBA 73 43 The worst playoff games of the best NBA players 31743101 Bill Russell Bill+Russell NBA

There’s only so much criticism that can be done of a guy who led a team to 11 championships in 13 years in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. (And that’s to say nothing of the fact that he also coached the team during two of those title years.) Russell couldn’t be perfect every night, and though he was mostly regarded as an elite defender and rebounder, Russell was nearly non-existent on offense during the 1969 Finals against the Lakers. Russell scored 9.1 points per game against Wilt Chamberlain and LA — including two six-point games that saw Russell make just two field goals. Of course, Russell’s biggest mistake that series may have come as a coach, as he decided not to double-team Jerry West until Game 3, allowing West to score 94 total points in the process. But it was all of little consequence; the Celtics won in seven games.

NBA 73 43 The worst playoff games of the best NBA players 31743098 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Kareem+Abdul-Jabbar NBA

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Lakers had a chance to close out the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 5 of the 1982 Finals, but a dud from Kareem, who scored six points on 3-of-6 shooting with Darryl Dawkins on him like glue, forced a Game 6. The six points were a career playoff low for Abdul-Jabbar, who also only had four rebounds in the 33-point drubbing. He was back to normal by Game 6, with 18 points and 11 rebounds as Los Angeles clinched the second of five championships in the 1980s.

NBA 73 43 The worst playoff games of the best NBA players 31743100 Larry Bird Larry+Bird NBA

Larry Bird will always be remembered as one of the greatest shooters the game has seen, but in Game 4 of the 1985 Eastern Conference Finals against Philadelphia, Bird lost his touch with a chance to close out the series. The damage report: 14 points on 4-of-15 shooting from the floor in a 115-104 loss. Things weren’t much better three nights later in Boston’s Game 5 win to advance to the Finals, with Bird scoring 17 points on 6-of-18 shooting. But by the time The Finals rolled around, Bird, who averaged a career 23.8 points per game in the playoffs, had gotten back on track.

NBA 73 43 The worst playoff games of the best NBA players 31740346 Wilt Chamberlain Wilt+Chamberlain NBA

When talking about a man who once scored 100 points in a game and once averaged 50 for a season, “good” and “bad” are really relative. But even Chamberlain had a few nights where he wasn’t at his best, and never was that more memorable than in Game 7 of the 1969 Finals against the Celtics. Chamberlain averaged a 20-20 during his first season with the Lakers, but those Finals in general weren’t his greatest, as he averaged just 12 points per game. Game 7 got the most attention though, as Chamberlain scored 18 points but sat out the final five minutes of what turned out to be a 108-106 Lakers loss. After the game,  Bill Russell famously accused Chamberlain of malingering, telling reporters, "Any injury short of a broken leg or a broken back isn’t good enough."

NBA 73 43 The worst playoff games of the best NBA players 31743096 Oscar Robertson Oscar+Robertson NBA

The Big O’s final game as a pro may have also been his worst — at least when it comes to the playoffs. Robertson’s Bucks had forced a Game 7 during the 1974 NBA Finals with a Game 6 win in Boston, and over the course of the first six games, Robertson had averaged 14.6 points per game on 56.4 percent shooting. But in Game 7, in front of a home crowd, Robertson struggled mightily, despite Kareem Abdul-Jabbar getting most of the attention from the Celtics’ D. The final line for Robertson six points on 2-of-13 shooting — not exactly the way to go out.

NBA 73 43 The worst playoff games of the best NBA players 31740347 Kobe Bryant Kobe+Bryant NBA

Kobe Bryant and Shaq had quite the racket going in the early 2000s, winning three straight titles together from 2000-2002. But en route to that first title, a then-22-year-old Bryant had arguably his worst playoff game as a pro. The Lakers found themselves one win from a title during Game 5 of the 2000 Finals at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the scene of an eight-point performance by Kobe, who went 4-of-20 from the field en route to a 120-87 loss. The Lakers did wrap things up in Game 6 however — though that one wasn’t much better for Kobe, who scored 26 points on 8-of-27 shooting before hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

NBA 73 43 The worst playoff games of the best NBA players 31743097 Shaquille O'Neal Shaquille+O%27Neal NBA

Shaquille O'Neal played in 216 career playoff games with six different teams, and the Diesel was almost always dominant. But that wasn’t the case in Game 5 of the 2008 first round against San Antonio. O’Neal, then with Phoenix — and, in his defense, on the downside of his career — played 29 minutes in the Suns’ five-point loss and managed 13 points on 2-of-8 shooting. He didn’t help himself from the line, either, where the notoriously bad foul shooter hit just nine of his 20 attempts. This wasn’t Shaq in his prime, of course, but it doesn’t make it any less ugly.

NBA 73 43 The worst playoff games of the best NBA players 31743095 Tim Duncan Tim+Duncan NBA

Tim Duncan, the Spurs' mainstay at power forward since 1997, has won played in 194 playoff games and won four championships. But even Mr. Fundamental is prone to an occasional dud. The worst? Try Game 4 of the 2010 first round against Dallas. Timmy’s line: Just four points on 1-of-9 shooting. Duncan did make himself useful with 11 rebounds, and fortunately the Spurs won the game. But it’s likely a game he’d rather forget.
