NBA 73 43 Top 5 Sixers of all time 31314652 Stacked Sixers Stacked+Sixers NBA

The Philadelphia 76ers franchise has won just three championships since joining the NBA in 1946 as the Syracuse Nationals. (The team moved to Philly in 1963.) That's 14 fewer than the Boston Celtics and 13 fewer than the Los Angeles Lakers. But when it comes to great players, the Sixers can hold their own with anyone. How strong is the team's all-time roster? Mo Cheeks (left) and Moses Malone (middle) didn't crack our top five. But don't worry. Dr. J (right) makes the list.

Dr. J was an ABA superstar before taking his spectacular skills to the NBA in 1976. He spent the next 11 seasons with the Sixers, making the All-Star team each year and winning league MVP in 1981. Two years later, with Moses Malone, he led one of the greatest teams in NBA history to the championship. If not for the Lakers and Celtics teams of the same era, Erving would surely have won multiple titles. But he revolutionized the game of basketball and will forever be the only Doctor every Philly fan loved to visit.

NBA 73 43 Top 5 Sixers of all time 31316436 Wilt Chamberlain Wilt+Chamberlain NBA

Since we're ranking players based solely on what they did in a Sixers uniform, it's difficult to judge Wilt, who played just four seasons for the team during his legendary 14-year NBA career. But what a run! His first season with the Sixers, Chamberlain averaged 34.7 points. His second, he averaged 24.6 rebounds. His third, he shot 68.3 percent from the field. And finally, in the 1967-68 season, he led the league in assists – yes, assists – and powered Philly to the championship. If he hadn't then forced a trade to the Lakers, Wilt might be the greatest Sixer of all time. Instead, that distinction belongs to...

NBA 73 43 Top 5 Sixers of all time 31314650 Allen Iverson Allen+Iverson NBA

Future basketball historians may regard Iverson as a ballhog who hated "talkin' 'bout practice," but that would be a shame. After coming to Philly as the No. 1 pick in 1996, Iverson electrified the Sixers franchise with his explosive talent and utter fearlessness for a full decade. The best small-man scorer in NBA history (step aside, Tiny Archibald), Iverson won his only MVP in 2001 while leading the Sixers to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Lakers in five games.

NBA 73 43 Top 5 Sixers of all time 31314651 Hal Greer Hal+Greer NBA

Greer doesn't have the name recognition of many of Philly's biggest stars, but he was one of the best players of his era (1958-73). A 10-time All-Star guard, Greer played his entire pro career with the Sixers franchise – unlike the rest of the players on this list – and remains the team leader in games and points. He averaged 27.7 points in the playoffs when the Sixers won the 1967 championship, ending Boston's eight-year title run.

NBA 73 43 Top 5 Sixers of all time 31314649 Charles Barkley Charles+Barkley NBA

Maybe we're biased because he was so much fun to watch (and still is, as a TNT analyst), but we give Sir Charles the nod here over some other deserving Nationals/Sixers greats: Dolph Schayes, Billy Cunningham, Moses Malone, Mo Cheeks, Paul Arizin and Neil Johnston. An irrepressible fan favorite, Barkley put up monster numbers on mediocre Philly teams for eight seasons before going to Phoenix, where he promptly became league MVP.
