Golden State Warriors acting coach Mike Brown was late to arrive at Oracle Arena for Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, and in a lighthearted press conference, Brown revealed that he was nearly arrested after being pulled over while driving in front of the Spurs' motorcade.
While Brown joked about the situation, Shannon Sharpe was stunned by the coach's reaction to the incident, and said on Wednesday's episode of Undisputed that Brown doesn't seem to understand how serious the situation really was.
Mike Brown: 'I’m not getting bullied'
“I didn’t have to stop for any of these red lights. So I literally start to go, and I’m going to get in the far left lane to go through where we all go through.
And a cop, out of nowhere, pulls in front of me and says ‘hey you, stop!’
I’m like ‘Warriors acting coach!’
He’s like ‘I don’t care! Hey, you, stop!’
So I’m feeling myself a little bit, I’m like hey, I’m not getting bullied by either Oakland PD or San Francisco PD. My own building? My own parking lot?
So I start to go a little bit, and another one pulls up. ‘Hey, you! You heard him! Stop!’
OK… if I scoot a little closer they’ve got to get scared, because I know I would get scared, from a car to a motorcycle. So I start scooting forward. And then an SUV pulls up, and I hear them over their speaker, ‘hey you, in the Range Rover.Stop! Right now! You heard the officers, stop!’
I got scared, I’ve got five cops around me. So I just stop. ‘Listen, I’m just trying to get to the game, I’m late.’
So I let the bus go, and the 18 cops, and I’m going around behind the bus, and I get this phone call. ‘Gregg Popovich, San Antonio Spurs.’ So I answer the phone and Pop is dying [laughing]. He goes, ‘Mikey, I didn’t know that was you! I’m sitting here, I see this black Range Rover, I see all these cops surrounding him, I see him trying to inch forward. I’m like ‘he’s about to get arrested!’”
Mike Brown doesn't understand how serious this situation really was
“As he was telling this story last night, I’m [thinking] he doesn’t get the gravity of what’s going on in our country.
He got afforded an opportunity that so many men of my race do not get afforded - and he’s laughing. Because he says ‘I’m the coach of the Warriors.’ But they see you as black, first.
That’s what I keep trying to tell people, is that they didn’t see you as the Warriors coach. They saw you as a black man that was not following orders.”

Brown was afforded a pass that many black men are not
“This could have turned out very, very differently. I get it, you’re laughing and coach Popovich is calling you and saying ‘you’re about to get arrested.’
But you got a benefit of the doubt that so many do not get, and their family members are not laughing. They’re crying. And there are people saying ‘what went on, what happened, why did this happen? This wasn’t supposed to happen.’”

This situation could have ended tragically
“I don’t know if Mike Brown is familiar with a gentleman named Oscar Grant, but there was a movie made about him and his life. It was called ‘Fruitvale Station.’ And it happened at BART, [right there]. Do you understand the Oakland PD and that San Francisco PD, and how the relationship with black men in that community [is]?
Does Mike Brown have any idea of just how lucky and just how fortunate he is?
Think about what he said. ‘I’m not going to let you bully me. I’ll pull my truck a little closer.’”

Don’t laugh about this
“We’ve seen a situation in Cincinnati where an officer fires into the car and kills [a man], Samuel DuBose.
Mike Brown… you’re making light of a situation that could have gone horribly and tragically wrong. Don’t laugh about this.
Cops pull up on you? Just pull over. Give them your information. The best thing you can do if a cop stops you and you’re driving is to get him from that police car to your car, back to that police car as fast as you possibly can, while minimizing the conversation.
Mike Brown, this is nothing to laugh about. And even when he was telling the story, I’m listening and my mouth is open because I’m saying ‘he doesn’t understand.’ He had no idea. He thinks that he was exempt from being a black man in America because he was the coach of the Golden State Warriors.”
