How to make the most realistic sports game even realer.
NBA 2K17 is gigantic and brilliant and ridiculously deep. It is, truly, a testament to what is possible when uncompromising game development meets unabashed capitalism. It is hyper realistic to the point of creepiness. In fact, the only thing about 2K17 that isn’t an inch-by-inch replication of the real-life NBA is MyCareer -- an RPG mode where you play as an NBA player juggling the on-court and off-court demands of stardom. MyCareer is true to life in its own way, but due to brand allegiance and the game’s “E for Everyone” rating, cannot explore some of the more ... interesting facets of being a professional basketball player in 2016. With that said, the following are eight storylines and features that would address this gap and make career mode a direct reflection of the pitfalls, friendships and social media climate facing NBA players. Because the only way the MyCareer experience could be more realistic involves the Kardashians, broke uncles and bad mixtapes.
Offer a "Savage Mode"
Not everyone is going to want to throw champagne bottles out of a moving Denali with Allen Iverson at 4 a.m., but giving players the option for complete savagery would only heighten the immersion 2K looks to build in MyCareer. Because weighing the choice between practice and play becomes a lot harder when the alternative to running the Boston Wing drill is dancing on the tables at LIV with Drake
More frenemies and hangers-on
Often times, it's the people we call friends who bring us the most trouble in this world, and if there's one thing that MyCareer is missing right now is the slew of B-list celebrities attempting to ride your wave. I firmly believe the final boss of 2K18's MyCareer should be Ray J. You would never survive.
More realistic Twitter mentions
MyCareer's current representation of social media does a good job of conveying its general whininess and insufferable nature, but fails to capture the full spectrum of meme-ry and recent divorces.
Replace the Shoe Creator with a Shoe Roaster
Instead of giving players the opportunity to create a shoe, give them what they really want: the opportunity to Get These Jokes Off. Would come with a timeline of shoe slander from around the web that refreshes daily and VC rewards for when your burn goes viral.
Family members asking for money
As awkward as it is necessary.
Offer players the chance to release a terrible mixtape
An optional storyline that culminates with your player joining Macklemore onstage at Coachella and doing a poorly-received "freestyle" about stopping the violence.
Create Your Own Fall Guy feature
Not having a fall guy is probably the most glaring omission of MyCareer. Having someone on the payroll who will drive, do corner store trips and fall on the grenade when you inevitably get popped rolling with the goods is an essential of any professional sports experience. Create-A-Fall-Guy addresses that need, giving you your very own, fully customizable Turtle who you can order around and post VC bail for.
Date a Kardashian storyline
Would cover the whole dating-a-Kardashian story arc, from meeting at a Grammys afterparty, attending the Met Gala together and the nasty public breakup days after your wedding (you and her will split the VC earned from the television deal). Dan is on Twitter constantly updating everyone on his MyCareer progress.
