A seemingly innocuous competition caution on Lap 22 of Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 ended up causing major havoc at Michigan International Speedway.
It began on pit road under yellow, when the left-front of Kyle Larson’s car tagged the right-front of Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s No. 88 as it attempted to exit his pit stall. Larson got the worst of it, losing a lot of sheetmetal from his right-front fender.
When the track went green on Lap 25, Danica Patrick got loose between Turns 1 and 2, her Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet hitting teammate Jeff Burton, who is substituting for Tony Stewart this weekend. Patrick went around, triggering a crash that also snared Justin Allgaier, Michael Annett, Martin Truex Jr., Matt Kenseth, J.J. Yeley and Trevor Bayne.
