Roush Rookie Watch: Record then near wreck
Hey everyone. Hope you're all doing well. After a couple of weeks off, we headed back to the track at Indianapolis three weeks ago. Coming off our great run at Memphis, I didn't want to take time off! We brought the same truck to O'Reilly Raceway Park that we ran at Memphis, and were hoping for the same result. It didn't quite work out that way, but we made the most of it. FinishMaster came on to sponsor our Ford F-150, and unfortunately, it wasn't that great of a night. We were decent on long runs, but we couldn't run with the guys up front; they were fast. We made a gamble to pit early and stay out and keep the track position later because we knew we wouldn't be able to keep up with those guys on fresh tires. It was going be harder to pass all of them than to hold them off. We wound up with a top-10 finish, but it wasn't that great of a night for us. Nashville started out badly, got better, then turned right back around. We sat on the pole and set a new track record. That was pretty cool. It was my first career pole in the truck series. We got hung on the outside at the beginning of the race and fell back to about 10th place when trouble found us. We got sent through the infield after getting hit from behind by my teammate, David Ragan. The hit and slide screwed up something on the truck because it wasn't driving right afterwards. I think we knocked something out of alignment, and it was pushing the pistons out of one of the calipers so I didn't have any brakes.
I've not yet been to the shop to get the final answer of what happened, but it just killed us for the rest of the day. I was having a tough time with that because I couldn't race anybody; I couldn't get in the throttle really hard. We just decided that we were going to ride it out there at the end. We got our lap back and got the best we could do with it. We wound up finishing 12th so I guess at the end of the day it could have been a lot worse. But we knew that it could have been a lot better, too. It seems like as soon as we went back to racing, we're sitting on another off-week. I love racing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. It's really a great series to be involved in. A lot of people like the schedule because it allows you time to do other things and have a life outside the race track. I've got a boat, and I really enjoy spending time out on Lake Norman with my friends. We have a good time with it. If I'm not out there, I'm off somewhere racing my late model. I think I'm just going to stay in town this weekend and relax a little. David and I have a Scotts appearance this week up in Warren, Mich. at a new Meijer store. I thought it was pretty cool that they asked us to be part of their grand opening. We'll check in again next month. Thanks again for all your support. It means a lot to know that you fans are behind us.
