Could Jeremy Mayfield race again?

FALLS FROM GRACE

Plenty of athletes have committed epic career blunders. Check out the top sports star screwups.

The troubled driver might just get that opportunity. ARCA team owner Roger Carter told SportingNews.com he would be interested in putting the suspended NASCAR driver in one of his cars, should the series approve him.

Mayfield was suspended by NASCAR in May 2009 after the sanctioning body said he failed a random substance-abuse test. Mayfield has denied using an illegal drug, but NASCAR said he tested positive for methamphetamines. Mayfield unsuccessfully challenged his suspension in court, saying the positive test stemmed from a mix of an over-the-counter allergy medication and the prescription drug Adderall.

Mayfield, 42, was in Catawba County Superior Court in Newton, NC, on Monday to face five felony charges, according to the Hickory Daily Record. The charges stemmed from a search warrant executed at his Catawba home in November. According to the newspaper, Mayfield is facing one count of possession of methamphetamine for 1.5 grams officers found in his home, three counts of possession of stolen goods and one count of obtaining property by false pretenses. He faces additional charges in another county for four counts of larceny for the theft of four trailers, the Hickory Daily Record reported.

“I want to move forward and continue working hard,” Mayfield said Monday, according to the newspaper. "I’m trying to get these legal troubles behind us and start over. This has been a load on us.”

His suspension covers only NASCAR events, though the ARCA series sometimes competes as a companion series at NASCAR tracks.

ARCA told SportingNews.com it would not comment on Mayfield's eligibility because he has not officially applied for a license.

Carter said he was interested in fielding a car for the driver in the June race at Pocono Raceway with his Carter 2 Motorsports team. Carter was once involved with Sadler Brothers Racing, which fielded a Cup car with Mayfield in 1993 to spark his career.
