Tim from Decherd, Tenn.: As you have written, there's a magic and a lot of memories in the Dodge Charger name, and it would be great to see a Petty car up front again. Why don't the Petty Enterprises cars seem to be as competitive as the other Dodge-backed teams if the money, car and backing are there? Darrell Waltrip: I like Kyle Petty because he's realistic. On qualifying day, he said he always likes to think he can sit on the pole, but he wanted to be in the top 20 which would be a great accomplishment for his team.
Ask DW
Petty Enterprises is on its way back. They've got a good engine program this year with Evernham Engines. They've made a lot of changes. I'd like to see that crowd break out this year. You talk about Dale Earnhardt at Daytona and how great he was. But many records at the World Center of Racing have a Petty name beside them. Richard Petty won the Daytona 500 by a record two laps. His father, Lee, won it by the closest of margins, two feet, in 1959. Kyle Petty wasn't third quickest on qualifying day like he was in practice on Saturday, but he was the top Dodge in qualifying with the 12th-fastest lap the day. The car looks good, and it has a nice ride to it. It sits up a little bit, but that's characteristic of the new Dodge. His car looks a lot like Ryan Newman's car with the nose up a little higher, and the quarter window, particularly at Daytona and Talladega, is something you can play with to get the air away from the rear spoiler.
