CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Three months after becoming engaged on hit reality TV show "The Bachelor," two-time groom wannabe Brad Womack and Emily Maynard have split up, the couple confirmed Wednesday.

Maynard, who was engaged to the late NASCAR driver Ricky Hendrick and is the mother of his child, told People magazine the split was mutual after they attempted to make the relationship work a number of times.

"We're no longer engaged," she said.

"I thought we would be planning a wedding, getting married. This is my worst nightmare. I thought there was no way Brad and I wouldn't work it out. I'm sad that we don't have a happy ending.

15 MINUTES OF FAME

Sports is the ultimate "unscripted TV." No wonder so many athletes, such as Jose Canseco), have appeared on reality shows.

"We didn't want to announce anything until we knew for sure."

Maynard, whom Womack described as "the one" before proposing to her on the final episode of the show — which viewers saw in March — said she had returned the $50,000 Neil Lane engagement ring to "The Bachelor" producers.

Womack, 38, said he suggested they split for good after a number of reconciliations, and Maynard "didn't disagree the last time."

"There were numerous moments that I threw my hands up and declared a breakup, but she stuck by my side," he said.

He also told the magazine that "the demise of our relationship was completely my fault."

Maynard, 25, said Womack struggled with becoming a parent to her six-year-old daughter, Ricki, and the pressures of a long-distance relationship became too much for her.

After initially indicating she would move to Womack's hometown of Austin, Texas, Maynard decided to stay in Charlotte, N.C., to provide a stable environment for Ricki.

"I need stability ... I didn't feel it would be a good move to take my daughter away from her life for a guy if I don't know if it's going to work out a month down the road," Maynard explained.

Maynard has taped an interview with "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" host Chris Harrison, which will screen during the July 11 episode of ABC's "The Bachelorette." Womack declined to take part in the interview.

Maynard was engaged to team owner Hendrick when he and nine others died in a 2004 plane crash while en route to Martinsville Speedway. Maynard's daughter is the grandchild of championship team owner Rick Hendrick.

In the 2007 season finale of the hit TV show, Womack, 37, shocked viewers when he rejected both DeAnna Pappas and Jenni Croft. But the network relied on him being a ratings winner again by giving him a do-over in the show's 15th season.

So far, only one couple from "The Bachelor" or its spin-off "The Bachelorette" has actually fulfilled the ultimate goal of the show by getting married after becoming engaged in the season finale.

Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter from the first season of "The Bachelorette" have been married since 2003 and now have two children.

Jason Mesnick, from season 13 of "The Bachelor," married runner-up Molly Malaney in February 2010 after initially rejecting her in the final episode for Melissa Rycroft.

Ali Fedotowsky, from season six of "The Bachelorette," remains engaged to Roberto Martinez.
