Long Pond, PA (Sports Network) - captured the Pennsylvania 500 at the Pocono Raceway, defeating by 0.366 seconds. The victory was Newman's fourth of the season and fifth of his Winston Cup career. Newman won his second race in the last three weeks and became the second straight driver to win at Pocono from the pole. "When you're on the pole on Friday, you have no excuses because this track is all about speed," said Newman. "The guys did an awesome job this week, not only with fuel mileage and strategy, but track position too." In the first few laps, pole sitter Newman pulled well out in front of the field, building a four and a half second lead after just 12 laps. By the mid-point of the race it was 2003 Pocono 500 winner leading the way with , points leader , and Newman following closely behind. But both Joe Gibbs Racing teams would be sidelined by engine failures with credited with 30th place and Stewart 37th in the final results. On the final stop, Newman took just two tires and enough fuel to reach the finish line and his team got him off pit lane first. With track position and a strong engine, Newman would never be headed. Busch made a late charge with five laps remaining. He moved to Newman's bumper, but just didn't have the power to get past the No.12 Penske Racing Dodge. "We weren't the fastest car at the end, but we were fast enough to pull off the win," said Newman. ., and completed the top-five. It was a bad day for many of the points leaders. Along with both Joe Gibbs drivers, finished a disappointing 36th after crashing on lap 125. It was also a bad day for , who was celebrating his 700th start. Rudd's No.21 Ford broke an oil pump belt and then blew an engine. He went to the garage and never returned, finishing 39th. Earnhardt Jr.'s third-place finish moved the No.8 Chevrolet driver into second place in the points standings, 232 behind leader (2,977-2,745). Gordon (2,669) fell to third, followed by (2,547) and Labonte (2,545).
