What a weekend it was for Richard Childress Racing. First of all, Johnny Sauter got the win in the Busch Series on Saturday. And Sunday it was all about who brought the victory home for the 29 car, the same place he did it last year in Chicagoland. John Roberts: I know a Winston Cup victory is always sweet, but couple what happened on Saturday and what's gone on the rest of this season, this one has to be just about as sweet as it gets. Richard Childress: It is, and as much stuff as we've had going on this year and we haven't had the kind of season (we would have liked to have). A lot of people are wondering what's going on at RCR. To be able to come back and have a weekend like we had here, a weekend like we had at Daytona where we really had some good runs, it shows the confidence of everybody back at RCR and the dedication of everyone. That's what I'm so proud of. Barry Dodson: We've talked about the trials and tribulations of RCR. Johnny Sauter in the Busch Series had certainly lost some confidence because he felt that maybe people had lost some confidence in him. All three Winston Cup cars were struggling, but winners find a way to win. Tell us how you feel. It's got to be great. R.C.: It is. Johnny got hurt at Talladega and California. He came back, and just to see him win the race and get his confidence back was just wonderful, and then , the stuff that he's had to go through the last few weeks or last several months with the whole race team. Nobody ever gave up. Our sponsors never gave up on us. AC Delco and Goodwrench have been with us a long time, and they never did question what we were doing. They just knew that we'd get it back. That's what I'm so proud of is the people that believed in us stuck with us. Steve Waid: They say that these days a couple of things win races -- among them are track position, tires and pit strategy. You guys got the best of all three today, wouldn't you say? R.C.: Yeah, even on Saturday the way (crew chief) Ricky Viers made the call for Johnny. We knew if we got the cars out front, (they would do well.) Our cars don't do good in traffic, but we got them out front. We knew we could do good, and once Kevin got going, I knew if we didn't run out of gas at the end, we'd win the race. J.R.: Kevin told us earlier this year that you've got to take the good with the bad in Winston Cup racing, but the one thing you can't ever forget is what got you to the good in the first place. What kind of changes, if any, when you guys were going through the bad part of this season, did you make? Did you tell the group to just stick to what brought us here in the first place? R.C.: Yeah that, and I just tried to explain how life is and how this sport is. It's so tough. It's a story of peaks and valleys. You go into your valleys. We did it with Dale Earnhardt several times, but we could always see a peak in front of us. As long as you know there's a peak that you can climb, you can make it. That's what I've tried to tell everyone at RCR every time we have our meetings. They believe in me, and they believe in this organization. We've got great drivers and great teams. B.D.: I've raced with you, and I've raced against you my whole career. I have the utmost respect for you and your organization, and I look for this thing to snowball and really turn this thing around for you guys. R.C.: We hope so. Before we went into Daytona, we all sat down and said we've got a clean slate. We're starting the points system over. Let's see how we do the last half. Everybody is dedicated and working hard: , , everybody that's in that organization. It's just tremendous. Hopefully we can get that snowball going our way.
