is ready to make some right turns this weekend in his Watkins Glen title defense. Winless in 29 races, the four-time Winston Cup champion has won four times in nine starts on the 2.45-mile New York track and holds the series record with seven road-course victories. "We want to win every race, but this team has a little more pride when it comes to road courses. We expect to win each time out," said Gordon, fourth in the season standings - 125 points behind leader . "The road courses are some of the toughest races because we're constantly shifting and turning with very few caution laps to rest. If it's hot like Indianapolis was last week, we'll have to be on top of our game mentally and physically." Gordon had a season-worst 37th-place finish in the June road race in Sonoma, Calif., losing the lead when his rear-end gear broke. "Sitting in that car while the team was making repairs was a tough pill to swallow," Gordon said. "It just seems like that's the way our season has gone. This team still has a lot of fight left and hopefully we've put all that bad luck behind us."

Road racers

Tom Hubert and have a chance to showcase their road-course skills this weekend as substitute drivers in the Winston Cup race at Watkins Glen. Hubert is replacing in Bill Davis Racing's No. 23 Dodge, and Jones is taking 's spot in A.J. Foyt Racing's No. 14 Pontiac. Hubert has diverse duties at BDR, serving as a mechanic, test driver and tire changer on 's Winston Cup car. "Tom is a great driver and an exceptional road-course racer," Bill Davis said. "I'm real appreciative of Hut being gracious and stepping aside this weekend." Jones is the son of 1963 Indy 500 winner Parnelli Jones. "Mike Wallace had told me he wasn't comfortable on the road courses and suggested we look for someone who has more experience," Foyt said. "P.J. has run there in sports cars, Busch and Winston Cup cars, so I hired him for that race."

Shopping spree

Christi Passmore is putting together her own ARCA RE/MAX Series fleet in a bid to compete full time next year. "We just bought five Fords - a Daytona car, two short-track cars and two intermediates," Passmore said. "We're also shopping around for a transporter. Right now, we're in the process of assembling a solid crew for next year. "Our goal is to run the complete 2003 schedule, but it's all contingent on how well we do. If we come out and tear a bunch of stuff up, we may have to re-evaluate what we're doing. But with any luck, we plan to run the whole deal." The Oklahoma racer is running a limited schedule this year in Andy Belmont-prepared Fords, with her next start set for Aug. 31 at Winchester Speedway in Indiana.

ALMS leaders

Audi Sport North America teammates Tom Kristensen and Rinaldo Capello top the American Le Mans Series' Prototype 900 class standings. Kristensen, from Denmark, has 139 points, two more than Capello, from Italy, after six of 10 races. They teamed to win last week in Quebec, their second victory in the last three races. The series will resume Aug. 18 at Mosport International Raceway near Toronto.
