'Springer' opts not to sponsor Busch

"Jerry Springer Show," Kurt Busch and Phoenix Racing team will not join forces in NASCAR

Roars of Jerry! Jerry! Jerry! and Kurt! Kurt! Kurt! might have to wait for another time.

Alas, NASCAR’s match made in heaven between "The Jerry Springer Show" and Phoenix Racing was shot down on Thursday night.

“Although the 'Springer' folks told us they are huge NASCAR and Kurt Busch fans, at this time they’re going to pass on the sponsorship opportunity,” said Phoenix Racing general manager Steve Barkdoll. “But they wished us good luck.”

Barkdoll said the popular talk show host was looking for a way to boost ratings and thought NASCAR could be the perfect avenue. Certainly, the colorful Phoenix Racing could have offered the perfect alliance.

Former Cup champion Kurt Busch, who is the defending winner of this weekend’s Toyota/Save Mart 350, has endured his share of made-for-Springer moments this season. Whether it was the confrontation with Ryan Newman’s team at Darlington Raceway, exchanging barbs with reporters or serving a NASCAR suspension after a verbal run-in with a reporter at Dover, Busch has provided plenty of fodder.

There have been highlights for Busch from a performance standpoint as well, including winning a race with brother Kyle Busch's Nationwide Series team at Richmond or finishing ninth for Phoenix Racing in the Cup race at Auto Club Speedway.

Despite making 15 starts this season, Busch remains 27th in Sprint Cup driver points.
